Online Training Course
for Early Career Researchers
To be held over two separate days
(Wednesday, March 17 & Friday, March 26, 2021), via Zoom
The HIRAKU-Global Program, in conjunction with the HIRAKU Program and the Career Advancement Project for Women Researchers (CAPWR) will hold an online training course targeted at Early Career Researchers affiliated with Hiroshima University or the associated organizations of HIRAKU-Global, HIRAKU or CAPWR. This online course will be conducted in English by IRIS Science Management Inc.'s Dr. Iris WIECZOREK over two separate days (Wednesday, March 17 & Friday, March 26, 2021), and will consist of two seminars, "Lab Leadership & Management Skills" and "Networking & Collaboration in Global Science".
Participant Details
Targeted Participants
Early Career Researchers affiliated with Hiroshima University or the associated organizations of HIRAKU-Global, HIRAKU or CAPWR. Priority will be given to tenure-track faculty members.
Maximum Amount of Participants
Twelve (12) for each seminar. Participation in only one, or, both of the seminars is possible.
Registration of Interest
As the amount of applications has exceeded the available positions, the registration of interest has been closed.
- Priority will be given to tenure-track faculty members.
- The Zoom access information will be sent out to those who are able to secure a position prior to each seminar.
Seminar Details
Seminar I – Lab Leadership & Management Skills
Lab leadership and management skills which are essential for today`s challenges in scientific work, can be acquired and developed. The seminar will enable group leaders at all levels to master the challenges related to interpersonal aspects of doing science and to confidently fulfil their leadership role.
Through our seminar you will recognize your leadership style, learn basic communication strategies and negotiation techniques to explain issues in a context specific way, to convince and motivate others, and learn basics for working with diverse teams.

Seminar II – Networking & Collaboration in Global Science
Of all roles an early career researcher must play, perhaps the most important is being an expert networker. Sources stress that making connections with colleagues in and out of their peer research group, maintaining those contacts, and always striving for broadening the network is the key to securing financial backing of projects. Moreover, in today`s era of “global science” it becomes more and more important to collaborate internationally in order to be successful.
Through our seminar you will learn basic skills for effective networking, acquire skills for intercultural understanding and for managing international teams.
