About Children Cancer

Childhood cancer occurs in 1 in 10,000 children.
Although it is rare, more than 2,000 children in Japan develop cancer each year.
As the only pediatric cancer center hospital in the Chugoku-Shikoku region, Hiroshima University Hospital treats many children with cancer every day.

Treatment for childhood cancer is much more difficult than treatment for adult cancer.
Since long-term survival cannot be expected unless the disease is completely cured, maximum intensity treatment is performed while suppressing side effects with drugs.
Children who are still mentally immature endure painful treatment without fully understanding the significance of treatment.
It has long been pointed out that psychological care is important for children with cancer.

Outline of the Project

Usefulness of VR games for children

In recent years, it has been reported that VR is not only useful for vocational training, but also has dramatic effects on children's mental care.

VR medical game development

Hiroshima University Hospital is now focusing on VR medical game development.
The representative of this project has been developing VR medical interview training software “VR OSCE” (Patent pending).
Using that experience, we have started a project to create a VR game for children with cancer.

This game will be made in collaboration with "Cells at Work!" (Kodansha, Tokyo)

This VR game project is accepting donations as part of Hiroshima University's Family House Fund.

  • The donation recruitment period is until June 30, 2024.

Thank you for your cooperation. We appreciate all of your support.

Donation

Making games requires money.
Although this project has already received various grants, we need more support.

This game is not for commercial purposes.
Once created, we plan to make it available for free download at hospitals treating pediatric cancer across Japan.
We would like to receive your help and support to protect the smiles of children suffering from childhood cancer.

After the Japanese version is completed, an English version will also be produced.

Donations can be made using the "Make a Donation (Green)" button.
If you are unsure about Japanese, please email the chief director.

Regarding the use of donations, donation procedures

The funds received will be used to create a VR game for long-term hospitalized pediatric cancer patients, and to purchase equipment so that the VR game can actually be used by pediatric cancer patients.

This VR game project is accepting donations as part of Hiroshima University's Family House Fund.
When making a donation for the VR game,
Please write “VR game” or just “VR” in comment section.

The target amount for this VR game project is 20 million yen.
If the total donation amount does not reach the goal, we will look for a game development company that can create a game with the raised amount.
If it is determined that the original purpose of motivating children for treatment cannot be achieved, the entire amount will be used for pediatric cancer patients and their families within the scope of the Hiroshima University Hospital Family House Management Fund guidelines.
In that case, we will notify on this website.
Even if the donation become more than the target amount, the remaining amount will be used within the scope of the Hiroshima University Family House Management Fund guidelines.
