Purpose of The Program

Purpose of The Program

In the 21st Century, the system for ensuring radiation safety is fragile, while the use of radiation in medicine and industry and nuclear power development is accelerating. Furthermore, the recent global instability raises the potential threat to the nuclear terrorism. In response to these global changes, there have been global needs for leaders who can direct the recovery in a situation of nuclear disaster or nuclear terrorism, in addition to optimize the radiation safety and protectively.

In this education program, Hiroshima University will develop global leaders (Phoenix Leaders) who will have the determination and judgment to take the best possible actions in response to the radiation disasters, and direct the recovery under a clear radiation response philosophy. Based on our experience and achievements in Hiroshima University for supporting the recovery from the atomic bomb, this program establishes “Radiation Disaster Recovery Studies” covering professional academic fields of medical science, environmental studies, engineering, the physical sciences, sociology, pedagogy and psychology. Form the basis of the “Radiation Disaster Recovery Studies”, this program develops “personnel for protecting lives from radiation disaster,” “personnel for protecting the environment from radioactivity” and “personnel for protecting children and society from radioactivity.”

Through the personnel development, this program will contribute to establishing a new system of the leadership and response for the radiation disaster for protecting safety and security as a 21st Century model.

Radiation Disaster Medicine Course (4-year integrated PhD program)

– personnel protecting lives from radiation disaster –

This is a 4-year integrated PhD program for graduates from 6-year professional schools (medical, dental, pharmaceutical, veterinary) and masters (medical physicist, etc.).

  • Training to diagnose pathological conditions and treat power plant workers and others affected by the radiation
  • Evaluation of the mechanism and risks of carcinogenesis and genetic damage caused by the radioactivity
  • Assessment of the psychological effects of stress caused by the radiation contamination and delivery of care for mental health
Radioactivity Environmental Protection Course(5-year integrated PhD program)

– personnel protecting the environment from radioactivity

This course is a 5-year integrated PhD program for bachelors (sciences and technology, agriculture, social sciences) and masters (sciences and technology, agriculture, social sciences).

  • Training to conduct chemical analysis of nuclear fission reactions and its by-products resulting from nuclear power plant accidents or nuclear terrorism or nuclear accidents
  • Proper measurement, evaluation and analysis of the environmental contamination
  • Proper decontamination and disposal/preservation of the radioactive waste
Radioactivity Social Recovery Course (5-year integrated PhD program)

– personnel protecting children and society from radioactivity

This course is a 5-year integrated PhD program for bachelors (sciences and technology, agriculture, social sciences) and masters (sciences and technology, agriculture, social sciences).

  • Conducting accurate and timely risk communication to alleviate social anxiety and damage generated by harmful rumors or misinformation
  • Supporting the reconstruction of affected communities
  • Supporting sound child rearing under the stress of radiation contamination
