Objectives
Hiroshima University has established the Hiroshima University Global Doctoral Fellowship to support international doctoral students by providing an environment where they can focus on their research, fostering their growth so that they can contribute to Japan’s future in science, technology, and innovation, and become global leaders.
This program seeks individuals with a broad perspective and knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to take action—those who can leverage these qualities to contribute to Japan’s future in science, technology, and innovation and to advance efforts that make the world a better place. In particular, we are looking for applicants who intend to be directly involved in creating science, technology, and innovation in Japan after earning their doctoral degree at Hiroshima University. This will be a key consideration in our selection process.
Selected students will be employed as research fellows and provided with a salary and research funds.

Eligibility
Students who plan to enroll in a Hiroshima University doctoral program in October 2026 are eligible.
We accept students from all research fields and do not set any age restrictions.
* Please note that you must submit a separate application for admission to Hiroshima University’s doctoral program.
Applying for the fellowship alone does not guarantee admission to the university.

Application Procedure

The application procedure is as follows.
Applying for this fellowship alone does NOT guarantee admission to the doctoral program.

- Prepare the application documents provided in Step 1 (Cover Page: Excel format; Application Form: PDF format only)
No additional documents (e.g., CV, letters, etc.) are required
- Submit your application documents to your prospective academic supervisor
*For those who have not yet decided on a supervisor: Please contact your prospective supervisor through HU-IAO.
Please note that obtaining permission to apply from a prospective academic supervisor requires a certain amount of time. Therefore, applicants must submit their request through the HU‑IAO system well in advance of the graduate school entrance examination application period.
Requests submitted during the entrance examination application period may not be accepted.

- Once the office has received the application documents from your prospective supervisor, you will be informed of the URL to the Google Form by email.
- Complete the form to finalize your application.
*You are required to complete the form by the application deadline.
Preparation Notes
- Application documents may be submitted in either color or black and white.
- Please submit the cover page in Excel format and the application form in PDF format.
- Application documents must be completed and submitted using the specified forms without modification.
Submissions that differ from the specified format may not be screened.
- The “Check Sheet” must also be completed and submitted. Incomplete check sheets may result in the application not being considered.
- In principle, revisions to application documents after submission are not permitted. Please ensure that your documents are complete and error-free before submission.
- Applications received after the deadline, including completion of the application form, will not be accepted for any reason.

General Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I apply if my admission to the doctoral program is not yet confirmed?
Yes, you can apply even if your admission to the doctoral program has not yet been confirmed.
However, please note that you must submit a separate application for admission to the doctoral program in addition to this fellowship application.
Admission procedures for the doctoral program are completely independent of this fellowship. Therefore, you are responsible for completing the necessary entrance examination and application procedures in time for the intended enrollment period.
For information regarding admission schedules and application procedures, please contact the relevant graduate school directly.
- I have not yet decided on a supervisor. What should I do?
Permission from a prospective supervisor is required to apply to the graduate program.
Please contact the faculty member with whom you wish to receive supervision through HU-IAAS.
- What happens if I am selected for the fellowship but cannot enroll in the doctoral program?
If you are unable to enroll, the fellowship selection will be canceled.
- Do I need Japanese language ability?
No. Japanese language ability is not required, and you do not need to submit any language proficiency certificates to apply for the fellowship.
- What are the screening criteria?
We cannot disclose the full details of the screening criteria. However, one important criterion is the applicant’s clear intention to continue contributing directly to Japan’s science, technology, and innovation after obtaining a doctoral degree at Hiroshima University. This commitment is given significant weight in the evaluation process.
- When will results be announced?
We plan to announce the result in late September.
