Research Performance Analysis and Comparison

By using the databases subscribed to by the University Library, you can compare the number of citations to your publications, as well as research output produced by other researchers, departments, or institutions.

Checking Citation Counts

You can review citation counts and societal impact for your publications registered in the Web of Science or Scopus databases by visiting your researcher profile page within each platform.

Web of Science

Based on the publications indexed in the WoS Core Collection, it is possible to conduct statistical analyses of citation counts.
Please note that coverage of Japanese-language articles, conference proceedings, and university bulletins is limited or inconsistent.

From your Researcher Profile page, you can view:

  • Total citation count
  • Citation trends by year
  • h-index (an index indicating that h publications have been cited at least h times)
  • Citation counts for individual publications

Checking Citations for Individual Articles

  1. Access Web of Science (typically the Web of Science Core Collection).
  2. In the top menu, choose Basic Search, then set the field to Author Name or Title.
  3. Search for your publication.
  4. In the results list, confirm the Times Cited count.
  5. Clicking the citation number displays a list of documents citing that publication.

Checking Citations for an Author

Using Author Search

  1. Select Author Search.
  2. Enter the author's last and first names.
  3. Narrow results by institution or research area.
  4. Select the relevant publications.
  5. Click Citation Report on the upper-right corner of the screen.

Using ResearcherID / Publons / ORCID

  1. Log in to Web of Science.
  2. Access your Researcher Profile.
  3. Your publication list will be automatically linked.
  4. Citation metrics can be viewed directly from your profile.

Scopus

Scopus provides similar functions. As Scopus covers a broader range of publications than Web of Science, the indexed literature is more extensive; however, coverage is still primarily international.

Checking Citations for Individual Articles

  1. Search for your article in Documents (by title, DOI, etc.).
  2. Open the Document Details page.
  3. In the Metrics section, confirm the Citation Count.
  4. For more detailed statistics, click View all metrics.

Checking Citations for an Author

  1. Switch to Authors search in the top menu and search by your name and affiliation.
  2. Open your Author Profile.
  3. Review total citations, publication count, h-index, h-graph, and other indicators.

Comparing Research Performance with Other Researchers or Institutions

Using InCites (based on Web of Science data) and SciVal (based on Scopus data), you can compare your research output with that of other researchers or institutions under standardized conditions.

InCites

With InCites, you can analyze data derived from Web of Science.

Comparing Researchers

  1. Log in to InCites.
  2. Open Analyze, then select Researchers.
  3. Add the researcher(s) you want to compare with.
・When names are common, filtering by ResearcherID or ORCID is recommended.
  4. Align comparison conditions:
・Period: last 5 years, entire period, or a defined range (match with comparison target).
・Research Area: use the same field for all subjects.
  5. View comparisons in TABLE or VISUAL format. Start by including:
    ・Publication count
    ・CNCI (Category Normalized Citation Impact)
・Percentage of papers in the Top 10%
  6. Add indicators such as Times Cited or Citation Impact if needed.
  7. When sharing results, always specify the period and field used.

Comparing Institutions

  1. Log in to InCites.
  2. Under Analyze, select Organizations.
  3. Add your institution and others for comparison.
  4. Align period and research area.
  5. Add indicators on international co-authorship when necessary.

SciVal

SciVal allows analysis based on Scopus data.

Comparing Researchers

  1. Log in to SciVal.
  2. Open Benchmarking.
  3. Set the entity type to Researchers.
  4. Add the researchers (or groups) for comparison.
  5. Align comparison conditions:
・Period: use the same year range.
・Subject Area: match across all subjects.
  6. Select indicators and compare on a single screen.
  7. Add total citations or citations per publication if needed.
  8. When sharing, specify period, field, and target definition.

Comparing Institutions

  1. Open Benchmarking.
  2. Set the entity type to Institutions.
  3. Add your institution and comparison institutions.
  4. Align period and subject area.
  5. Compare using:
    ・Publication count
    ・FWCI (Field-Weighted Citation Impact)
・Percentage of Top X% cited papers
  6. Add indicators on international/industry collaboration as needed.
  7. Specify comparison conditions when sharing.
