More than 30 graduate students joined in “Preparing Future Faculty Course (Basic)”

An intensive course, "Preparing Future Faculty Course (Basic)" (hereafter referred to as "the Lecture") in the first semester of 2022 was held on September 20, 22, 26 and 27. The instructors included Professor Yusuke Sakurai (Associate), Yasushi Maruyama, Yuichi Miyamoto (Assistant), Takahiro Sumiya and Toshihiro Yamada. There were other instructors from various disciplines in micro-teaching sessions, which were an essential part of this Lecture.

Thirty-six Students enrolled in the Lecture across all the departments of the University. The topics of the Lecture included curriculum development, learning theory, lesson evaluation, lesson plan and design, online education and copyright, microteaching, best teacher lectures, the academic profession, and student-centred university pedagogy.
The students were active in group discussions and shared many interesting experiences, ideas and perspectives. For the final assignment which reflects the topics of the Lecture, the students were required to summarise stimulating and intellectually inspiring experiences during this Lecture.

They had to become aware of their educational philosophy and incorporate their educational theories in their lesson design. The task required them to revise and improve their curriculum and lesson plans which they had submitted as a pre-course assignment. This cycle offered an effective opportunity for their learning on curriculum development. Mr Koki Yamauchi (Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences) liked this opportunity to intensively learn university pedagogy. He also commented that it would have been more valuable if he had had opportunities to discuss his microteaching experience with peers in the other groups.

Through this course, the students who are interested in the academic profession deepened their understanding of university pedagogy. Some areas need to be improved, such as sharing the goals of the Lecture among instructors, more efficient course delivery and Teaching Fellow collaboration.
