As a teacher, researcher, and mother: To build a society where everyone can live comfortably

I am currently working as a lecturer at the National Institute of Technology (KOSEN), Kure College. At the same time, I am also involved in educating aspiring engineers to consider what they can do to solve social issues and put them into action, as well as carrying out research and local activities related to environmental conservation. Meanwhile, at home, I spend my time facing my child, as a mother of a son who turned five years old in July 2022.

When I was a mechanical engineering student at the National Institute of Technology, Wakayama College, I developed a strong interest in environmental conservation. Therefore, I transferred to Hiroshima University. At graduate school, I conducted research on river water quality. After graduation, I worked at the International Center and the Center for Peace of Hiroshima University before taking my current job. I may seem to be a job hopper, but the fields I have been involved in, namely, environmental conservation, international exchange, and peacebuilding, are all closely connected. My experience in these fields enables me to tell my students how engineering can contribute to environmental conservation, international exchange, and peacebuilding. I feel that I have succeeded in “making my life history my ally.” Currently, I am also focusing on solving issues surrounding children with foreign roots, which I have come to recognize while raising my own son. To facilitate communication between daycare teachers and foreign parents, I have developed a pointing tool. My son has given me a new perspective.

The society we live in is constantly changing. These changes may cause issues. I believe that by becoming aware of such issues and taking action, we can gradually change society into a place where everyone can live comfortably.

To students: Raising children gives you new perspectives

Women tend to think that once they get married or have a child, they will have to take care of all the housework and childcare. That’s not true. Even if you get married or have a child, you can continue to pursue your dreams and goals. I want you to enjoy your life passionately without giving up. And men, I would urge you to play an active role in childrearing, not just as a helper, when you become a father. I believe that childrearing experience will make your life fulfilling and surely bring a new perspective to your work.
