Pre-Application Orientation and Roundtable Discussion Held for HUSA/USAC Overseas Studies

On November 6, 2013 (Wed) from 6:10 p.m. - 7:40 p. m., HU held a pre-application orientation and roundtable discussion for HUSA/USAC at the Student Plaza 1 Floor on the Hiroshima University Higashi-Hiroshima Campus. There were about 60 participants, mostly students who intended to apply for the HU foreign exchange program HUSA/USAC and those who were interested in overseas studies in general.

In the first half of the session, Overseas Study Advisers * gave explanations about the whole process from the application for HUSA/USAC to dispatch and also talked about scholarships and the mental attitude necessary for studying abroad.

In the second half of the roundtable discussions, 9 students with experience of studying abroad (Destinations: America [3],England, Korea [2], China, Finland, France) sat together with the participants at each destination’s table and talked about studying overseas.

Many students asked very specific questions ranging from applications to returning home. The students inquired about the “selection of the destination and the host university”, “language learning methods”, the “way of writing the ‘Statement of Purpose for Applying to Overseas Studies’”, “lessons at the host university” and “job hunting after returning home”. The students who had studied overseas answered each question politely, thinking back on their own experiences.

Altogether, the students could gain a better and more detailed understanding of studying abroad. They answered the questionnaire and wrote down their impressions such as “There were things I couldn’t understand completely only by consulting the homepage. but after I heard the seniors talk about their real experiences, I knew more.”, or “I was happy that a senior gave me detailed information about the university that I am applying to and that I could exchange opinions concerning overseas study with other interested students.”

* Overseas Study Advisers are students with experience studying abroad who work as Phoenix Assistants of the International Exchange Group. They offer individual counseling on overseas study and conduct orientation meetings. For more information, click here. (Go to Momiji Japanese page)
