On June 11 2014, HU held a special lecture by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to Japan Yusron Ihza Mahendra at the Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences lecture room. Around 100 people especially students attended the lecture by the Ambassador who spoke on the “Relationship of Indonesia and Japan”.
His Excellency Ambassador Yusron who has acquired his Ph.D. from a Japanese university returned to Indonesia after working as the Tokyo Branch Manager of the Indonesian daily newspaper “Kompas”. In 2004, he was elected as a member of parliament and entered the world of politics, and was appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to Japan in February this year.
Prior to the lecture, His Excellency paid a courtesy visit to President Asahara, and exchanged views about the exchange between Indonesia and Hiroshima University. With many participants in the lecture, H.E. Ambassador Yusron provided an easy-to-understand explanation to the participating students about the relationship between the two countries based on his extensive experience in Indonesia and Japan. In the question and answer session that followed, there were questions from students about the history of the relationship between Japan and Indonesia and future prospects. His Excellency stated that Japan’s presence had weakened than before in Indonesia, and that closer relations must be forged between the two countries.
At Hiroshima University, we send about 24 students to Indonesia every year through the study abroad experience called the START program which focuses on new students. Through such student exchange programs and lectures, further mutual understanding between the two countries can be expected.
