This year a Summer Program for Peace and Law was held from July 27 through August 7 at Hiroshima University. Led by Prof. Masato Ninomiya from the Faculty of Law of the University of Sao Paulo, one of HU’s visiting professors, 14 students participated from the University of Sao Paulo, one of our academic exchange agreement partners.



The main theme of the program was “Peace and Law”, and it was held on three subjects; (1) Law Lectures, (2) Japanese Language and Culture Experience and (3) Peace Learning. In addition to attending lectures held by the teaching staff of the Faculty of Law and the Law School of HU, students were also able to visit a district court where they attended a trial as an audience. As for Japanese Language and Culture Experience, not only did they attend Japanese language, calligraphy and flower arrangement lessons, but also visited an old traditional house (kominka) on the coastal area of the Seto Inland Sea where they experienced Japanese summer culture by wearing Yukata. Furthermore, for Peace Learning, they were able to deepen their understanding of the tragedy caused by the atomic bomb by attending the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony on August 6, visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, in addition to listening to experiences from atomic bomb survivors.



The participants were able to learn about the importance of peace and Japanese society and culture through this program. We expect that they will convey their experience at Hiroshima to many people after their return home, and will form a bridge between Brazil and Japan as mutual supporters of Japan.
