【Recent highlights】
Several novel genetic polymorphism of ryanodine receptor 1 (RYR1) have been identified and authorized as the causes of Malignant Hyperthermia. Part of these research was presented at the 66th annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists in 2019 and won the best abstract and presentation award.

Profiles of Faculty and Research Scholars

【Education】
The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at Hiroshima University Hospital manages more than 4,500 surgical cases a year.  We provide a unique anesthesia plan for each of our cases.  Our highly experienced staff will accompany patients and provide excellent knowledge and techniques from the pre-operative exam at an anesthesiology outpatient clinic, through surgical anesthesia management, and during post-operative pain management. Our department also offers surgical ICU consultation services handling critical post-surgical cases.  We also offer a variety of pain management services including epidurals, nerve blocks, and pharmacotherapy. Our staff participates in continued medical education and gain vital experience in handling specific treatments unique to the university hospital. We also educate and train future anesthesiologists in the operating room, outpatient pain and anesthesia clinics and the surgical ICU.

【Research】
The research subjects that derives from clinically important issues of anesthesia care are as follows.
・Epidemiology and cultivation of skeletal muscle cell for the experiment of Malignant Hyperthermia
・Perioperative care management of enhanced recovery after surgery
・Pain control research using the animal model
・Developing monitoring system for perioperative management
・Basic research for cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury
・Clinical study of vascular elasticity during anesthesia
