【Recent highlights】
As for treatment of arrhythmia, Hiroshima University Hospital is one of the top hospitals. We perform catheter ablation or device therapy using most-advanced medical equipment. We also make a strong effort to treat lethal arrhythmia, such as Brigade syndrome. We can use left atrial appendage closure device (WACHMAN(R)) to prevent cerebral infarction in patients with atrial fibrillation.
The Heart Failure Center in Hiroshima University Hospital, established in 2012, has focused on maintaining the heart failure patients’ activities of daily life and preventing their readmission through the interprofessional team approaches. Now, Hiroshima University Hospital is a model hospital or Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry. We can treat particular kind of cardiomyopathy such as Amyloidosis’ or Salcoidosis.
For patients with severe valvular diseases, we perform accurate preoperative evaluations of patients using cardiac CT and 3D trans esophageal echocardiography. We construct a heart team and perform TAVI or MitraClip(R) for patients with severe valvular diseases. As brain-heart team, we perform PFO occluder for paradoxical embolism caused by PFO. We can use FFRCT for estimate coronary heart diseases and also try to cure complex coronary vessels. We positively treat patients with cardiogenic shock using transvascular left ventricular assist device (Impella®).
We actively forge ahead with basic and clinical studies and publish 45 English original papers in 2019, 54 papers in 2020 and 53 papers in 2021.

Profiles of Faculty and Research Scholars

【Education】
In our department, the students will learn about the normal structure and function of cardiovascular system as well as the pathology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. In the developed countries including Japan, the aging of population and change of lifestyle, have contributed to an increase in the number of ischemic heart diseases, cardiac valve diseases, arterial diseases, heart failure, and arrhythmias. The educational goals in our department are to acquire the fundamental knowledge and technique for the management of cardiovascular diseases, and to learn how to obtain new evidence in the field of cardiovascular medicine.
