【Recent highlights】
As for treatment of arrhythmia, Hiroshima University Hospital is one of the top hospitals. We perform catheter ablation or device therapy using most-advanced medical equipment. We also make a strong effort to treat lethal arrhythmia, such as Brigade syndrome. We can use left atrial appendage closure device (WACHMAN(R)) to prevent cerebral infarction in patients with atrial fibrillation.
The Heart Failure Center in Hiroshima University Hospital, established in 2012, has focused on maintaining the heart failure patients’ activities of daily life and preventing their readmission through the interprofessional team approaches. Now, Hiroshima University Hospital is a model hospital oh Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry. We can treat particular kind of cardiomyopathy such as Amyloidosis’ or Salcoidosis.
For patients with severe valvular diseases, we perform accurate preoperative  evaluations of patients using cardiac CT and 3D trans esophageal echocardiography. We construct a heart team and perform TAVI or MitraClip(R) for patients with severe valvular diseases. We can use FFRCT for estimate coronary heart diseases and also try to cure complex coronary vessels.
We actively forge ahead with basic and clinical studies and publish 55 English original papers in 2019.

Profiles of Faculty and Research Scholars

In our department, the students will learn about the normal structure and function of cardiovascular system as well as the pathology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. In the developed countries including Japan, the aging of population and change of lifestyle, have contributed to an increase in the number of ischemic heart diseases, cardiac valve diseases, arterial diseases, heart failure, and arrhythmias. The educational goals in our department are to acquire the fundamental knowledge and technique for the management of cardiovascular diseases, and to learn how to obtain new evidence in the field of cardiovascular medicine.

Our current focuses go as follows.

  1. Pathophysiology and Subcellular Signaling in Cardiomyocyte and Vascular Cells
  2. Endothelial Dysfunction and Atherosclerosis
  3. QOL Care and Long-term Clinical Management of Heart-Failure Patients
  4. Cardiovascular Imaging in Future (CT, MRI, PET etc.)
  5. Investigation of New Arrhythmia Treatment Strategies
  6. Clinical and Molicular Biological Research of Fatal Arrhythmia
  7. Clinical and Molicular Biological Research of Atrial Fibrillation
  8. Coronary Circulation and Atheromatous Plaques in Coronary Arteries
  9. Changes in Sympathetic Nervous Activity Following the Treatment of Valvular Heart Diseases
  10. Clinical Research of Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Patients with Valvular Heart Disease
  11. Vascular Regenerative Therapy by BM-derived Autologous Stem Cells
  12. Cardiopulmonary Exercise Study (CPX) and Advanced Echocardiography for Heart Failure Patien
  13. Pathophysiological and Clinical Research of Catheter Intervention for Structural Heart Disease
  14. 3D Echocardiography-Based Diagnosis and Treatment Strategies for Structural Heart Disease
