14th International Summer School

The 14th International Summer School was held from September 12th to 16th, 2022, inviting a total of 12 students and academic staffs from 3 partner universities in 2 countries, namely Sultan Zainal Abidin University (Malaysia),  Airlangga University (Indonesia), Gadjah Mada University, Faculty of Agriculture (Indonesia), Gadjah Mada University, Faculty of Animal Science (Indonesia).

This year’s summer school followed the previous format, which was inviting not only students but also their academic supervisors that would foster further opportunities to implement cooperative research. Also, on September 15th, the “International Symposium on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” was organized.
Also this year, the program was selected for the 2022 International Youth Science Exchange Program (Sakura Science Program) of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), and received support from JST.

On the first day, September 12th, a welcome ceremony was held after the orientation. 
In the afternoon, an information session was organized to provide admission and scholarship information for interested students.
The participants also visited a laboratory of the School of Applied Biological Science.

The main event on the first day was a Japanese cultural experience, including a chance to experience the chanting and dancing of Noh, a unique Japanese performing art, and to try on a yukata.

For the following two days, on September 13th and 14th, the invited guests visited different laboratories to experience and discuss specific scientific interests.

Program Work

In the morning of September 15th, the guest were able to learn about the social implementation of agricultural science and learned about the reality of actively recruiting foreign human resources and linking them to global development, which may have further motivated them to study abroad.

In the afternoon, the international symposium was held attracting close to 60 participants. The presenters consisted of the four guest professors, and also one from HU, who delivered their research outcomes and discussed how SDGs could be achieved through their researches. Moreover, during the break time, there were poster presentations by 10 graduate students of HU.

After the symposium, a farewell ceremony was held and participants were awarded certificates by the Vice Dean.

On the last day of the 16th, a tour was conducted to learn about the history of Hiroshima. Through visits to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, the Atomic Bomb Dome and Miyajima Island, the participants were able to get a bird's eye view of Hiroshima's history and learned how the city has grown into a symbolic city that seeks peace, thereby strengthening the significance of studying in Hiroshima.

  • In general, the international summer school program organized by Hiroshima University was very interesting. Everyone was also very friendly to us, starting from departure from home country, the conduct of the program, until our return to Indonesia. We hope that every year, this event can be carried out.
