HU Malaysia Alumni Association Established

The Inaugural Meeting for the Hiroshima University Malaysia Alumni Association was held at a hotel in Putrajaya on March 15, 2014. In February of last year, HU awarded an honorary doctorate degree to Dr. Abdul Razak (deceased) at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Dr. Razak, a former student from Southeast Asia who studied at the old Hiroshima University or Hiroshima University of Literature and Science, suffered from the bombing in Hiroshima when he was at school. This inauguration meeting was organized mainly by the alumni of HU, who had also attended the degree awarding ceremony. Executive and Vice President Dr. Tetsuji Okamoto, Associate Professor Tetsu Kubota (Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation) and others, altogether about 40 participants joined this meeting.

In his opening speech, Executive and Vice President Dr. Tetsuji Okamoto made the following address: “So far, about 250 Malaysian students graduated from Hiroshima University. We hope that with the establishment of the HU Malaysia Alumni Association, this will provide the impetus for friendship between the alumni along with assistance to prospective students who wish to study at Hiroshima University or Japan and serve as a bridge between Japan and Malaysia.”

Afterwards, the executives were elected. Through each participant’s vote, Dr. Mohd Zulkefeli Mat Jusoh, a Senior Lecturer of the Universiti Teknologi MARA who has acquired a doctor’s degree (Pharmaceutical Science) from the HU Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences was elected as president of the Association. After that a social gathering was held, and the graduates renewed old friendships by talking about memories from the time they studied abroad and catching up with each other.

Hiroshima University makes strong efforts toward networking with the alumni abroad through its overseas alumni associations. We expect that the establishment of the HU Malaysia Alumni Association will stimulate exchange between graduates in Malaysia, reinforce cooperation between HU and the alumni and strengthen the network of personal contacts.
