Abstract:

Analogues of Prussian Blue, the cubic transition metal hexacyanometalates have many useful properties such as zeolitic structure, electrocatalytic activity, and magnetism, etc. [1,2]. Using LB technique, we have grown crystals (size 50-300 nm) of Prussian Blue Analogues (PBA), by employing a Langmuir monolayer of octadecyl amine (ODA) as a template at the air-water interface [3,4]. Magnetization data on nickel and iron hexacyanochromate films (thickness of 100–300 nm) having their cubic crystals oriented in {1 0 0} direction in the crystalline film indicated ferromagnetic behaviour below Curie temperatures of 72 and 21 K, respectively [5].

To integrate nanoparticles into functional devices, one needs to improve their processibility. For this purpose, sodium hexametaphosphate (HMP) stabilized nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) nanoparticles (average size 22 nm) were prepared in aqueous solution and extracted into an organic phase using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the surfactant, facilitating multilayered deposition of the surfactant-encapsulated nanoparticles using the LB technique [6]. These films were used to sense K+ ions by monitoring their electrochemical response [7].

We shall also discuss the synthesis of a Polyaniline-Prussian Blue Hybrid [8], and DNA templated supramolecular self-assembly of nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) nanocrystals in different morphologies induced by change in temperature of a double stranded Calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA)[9].
