Uncertainty limits of the information exchange between a quantum system and an external meter

We investigate the quantum dynamics of measurements by separating the dynamics of the meter from the dynamics of the system. It is shown that the sensitivity of the meter response is determined by the quantum coherent fluctuations of the force with which the meter acts on the system. The trade-off between resolution and uncertainty is therefore determined completely by the quantum mechanical relation between sensitivity and uncertainty in the meter system.
