Obituary: Dr. Abdul Razak, Former Student from Southeast Asia and Honorary Doctor of Hiroshima University

Dr. Abdul Razak, a former student from Southeast Asia, and recipient of an honorary doctorate of Hiroshima University passed away on July 18, 2013 at a hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He was 88 years old.

In 1944, Dr. Razak was a government sponsored overseas student who visited Japan as a student from Southeast Asia, and in April of 1945 he attended the Hiroshima University of Literature and Science, one of the predecessors of Hiroshima University. However, although that year he was able to narrowly escape with his life from the atomic bomb of August 6th, he was forced to cut his studies short and return home to his country.

After his return home, he endeavored to strengthen the ties of friendship between Malaysia and Japan while being a major contributor to the development of Japanese language education in Malaysia and promoting peace activities. Therefore, HU awarded him with an honorary doctorate degree in February 2013.

We were deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Razak, and we would like to offer our deepest sympathies.
