Obituary: Dr. Hasan Rahaya, Former Student from Southeast Asia and Honorary Doctor of Hiroshima University

Dr. Hasan Rahaya, former student from Southeast Asia and recipient of an honorary doctorate of Hiroshima University, passed away on November 30, 2014 in Jakarta, Indonesia. He was 91 years old.

In 1944, Dr. Hasan Rahaya was a government-sponsored overseas student who visited Japan as a student from Southeast Asia. In the April of 1945, he attended Hiroshima University of Literature and Science, a predecessor of the present Hiroshima University. However, that year he narrowly escaped with his life from the atomic bomb on August 6th, forcing his studies to be cut short.

After returning home, he endeavored to strengthen the ties of friendship between Indonesia and Japan whilst being a major contributor to the development of peace activities. For his efforts, HU awarded him with an honorary doctorate degree in March 2013.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Hasan Rahaya, and would like to offer our deepest sympathies.
