Research Student

Students wishing to study a specific subject, at either the undergraduate or graduate level, may be admitted as research students ("kenkyuusei").
Research students are not entitled to degrees upon completion of his/her research work.

Admission Requirements

- Those who may be admitted to the School of Integrated Arts and Sciences as a foreign research student shall:
(1)have completed of 14 years of formal education in a foreign country.
or
(2)have graduated from a university, or a junior college in Japan ("tanki daigaku", which offers a 2 or 3 years of curriculum-based learning), after having completed 12 years of education in a foreign country.
or
(3)be recognized by the School of Integrated Arts and Sciences as having the equivalent qualifications as a research student.

- Those who may be admitted to the Graduate School as a foreign research student shall:
(1)have completed of 16 years of formal education in a foreign country.
or
(2)be recognized by the Graduate School as having the equivalent qualifications as a research student.

Enrollment Period and Research Period

Enrollment date: April 1st or October 1st (July 1st for “3+1 program” graduates.) 
Research Period: 6 months or 1 year (3 months for “3+1 program” graduates.)

Those wishing to continue to study as international research students may extend the duration, but as a general rule, the duration can only total up to 2 years.

Application Guide for Research Students

Approval of Acceptance from the Prospective Academic Supervisor

At the time of requesting application documents, the applicant must already have an approval of acceptance from the prospective academic supervisor. Please be sure to obtain approval of acceptance from the prospective academic supervisor through HU-IAO.

Please refer to HU-IAO for details on how to obtain acceptance through "HU-IAO".

How to Request Application Documents and Request Period *Prior confirmation of Admission Requirements and Language Proficiency is required.

Applicants who have been approved of acceptance from their prospective academic supervisor should send an email to <Contact Address> during the <Period to Request Application Documents> determined for each admission period, and inform of their desire to apply as a research student and having obtained an approval of acceptance from their prospective academic supervisor.

 Please strictly adhere to the deadline of 5:00 pm on the relevant date. 
If the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, holiday, etc., the deadline will be the immediately preceding weekday.

 

Language Proficiency Required for Admission

For admission to the School of Integrated Arts and Sciences or Integrated Arts and Human Sciences Program in Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences:
The applicant must have scored 120 points or higher on Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level N1, 590 points or higher on TOEFL (80 points or higher on iBT/iBT Home Edition), 800 points or higher on TOEIC, 6.0 points or higher on IELTSTM, 170 points or higher on Cambridge English, or 425 points or higher on CET-6 in principle.

For admission to Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering Program in Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering :
Language proficiency required by the applicant's prospective academic supervisor

For admission to Program of Life and Environmental Sciences in Graduate School of Integrated Science for Life:
As to Japanese ability, a Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N1 certificate or level 1 score of 240 points or more is preferable. As to English ability, a TOEFL score of 500 points (CBT 173 points) or more is preferable.

HU-IAO

HU-IAO is a system that assists applicants to contact with their desired academic supervisor.

Please contact your desired academic supervisor through HU-IAO (International Admissions Assistant System) to obtain approval of acceptance.

Of the documents to be uploaded to HU-IAO, certificate of (expected) graduation/completion and proof of language proficiency are required for prior confirmation of admission requirement and language proficiency, so please carefully read the notes below.

[Language Proficiency]
Copy of a transcript (within 3 years in principle) that confirms the “Language Proficiency Required for Admission”

*An applicant who is required to use English/Japanese as a principal language in their research, may be exempted from submitting an official score certificate of language proficiency under the following conditions:
If he or she has been enrolled in a Secondary education (equivalent to middle or high school level) program whose medium of instruction is English/Japanese for more than 6 years, and has graduated (or expected to graduate).
If he or she has been enrolled in a Higher education (equivalent to university level) program for more than 4 years and has graduated (or expected to graduate).

If academic fees and living expenses are paid by someone else, a bank balance certificate and a certificate of employment, etc., of that person and a document certifying the relationship with the applicant should be submitted.
