Research Student

Students wishing to study a specific subject, at either the undergraduate or graduate level, may be admitted as research students ("kenkyuusei").
Research students are not entitled to degrees upon completion of his/her research work.
Please discuss the substance of your research with the professor under whom you wish to study before applying.

Notes on application

For applicants for School of Integrated Arts and Sciences or Integrated Arts and Human Sciences Program in Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences ; After consulting with your prospective academic supervisor and getting permission of application from him/her, please get the necessary application documents within the period as follows. We will issue the guidebook and application forms only to those whom we could have confirmed in advance that they have completed the prescribed school years and met the language proficiency requirements. Please observe the period.

●For admission in April: (Applicant residing overseas) From October 1 to October 31
                                    (Applicant residing in Japan) From January 1 to January 31

●For admission in October:(Applicant residing overseas) From April 1 to April 30
               (Applicant residing in Japan) From July 1 to July 30

(Notice) The deadline is 5 pm on the last day of the period. If the date is Saturday, Sunday, or Public holiday, the day before will be considered that date.

Admission Requirements

- Those who may be admitted to the School of Integrated Arts and Sciences as a foreign research student shall:
(1)have completed of 14 years of formal education in a foreign country.
or
(2)have graduated from a university, or a junior college in Japan ("tanki daigaku", which offers a 2 or 3 years of curriculum-based learning), after having completed 12 years of education in a foreign country.
or
(3)be recognized from the Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences as having the equivalent of one of the requirements listed above.

- Those who may be admitted to the Graduate School as a foreign research student shall:
(1)have completed of 16 years of formal education in a foreign country.
or
(2)be recognized by the Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences as having the equivalent qualifications as a research student.

[9] Documents that certify the applicant’s language ability
The applicant must have scored 120 points or higher on “Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level N1,” 590 points or higher on “TOEFL” (80 points or higher on iBT), 800 points or higher on “TOEIC”, 6.0 points or higher on "IELTS", 170 points or higher on "Cambridge English", or 425 points or higher on “CET-6” in principle.

Applicant residing overseas: 4 months before admission
(November 30 for admission in April, and May 31 for admission in October)
Applicant residing in Japan: 1 month before admission
(February 28 for admission in April, and August 31 for admission in October)
