“Optimization of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural Production from Glucose in Hydrothermal Conditions”

Research in biomass conversion is of utmost importance as it has the potential to decrease the dependency on fossil fuels and address environmental concerns. Glucose, a compound commonly used in biomass feedstock, plays a crucial role in the production of 5-hydroxymethyfurfural (5-HMF), a versatile platform chemical with a wide range of industrial uses. 5-HMF have proven to be valuable for production of fuels, flavors, perfumes, solvents, medicines, agrochemicals and polymers. To date, many researchers have studied the hydrothermal decomposition of glucose and identified 5-HMF as an intermediate product. However, there is still a lack of detailed investigations specifically focusing on the reaction kinetics of 5-HMF production under both subcritical and supercritical water conditions. This study aims to fill the gap by elucidating reaction rate of 5-HMF from glucose focusing on short residence time with no catalysts addition.

“Mechanochemistry of biomass using a twin-screw extruder: Strategy of the COI-NEXT Kanazawa University”

We will introduce our efforts to chemical reactions of biomass using mechanical energy without
using solvents. In particular, we will focus on recent achievements in the production of waterabsorbent polymers and thermoplastic bioplastics through esterification reactions of biomass using mechanochemistry. We will also introduce our efforts at JST COI-NEXT.
