  • [Feb. 14, 2022] Weekly Bunkyo News reported about our international exchange online meeting supported by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) Sakura Science Exchange Program.
Weekly Bunkyo News, volume 2687 (February 14, 2022) (BUNKYO NEWS Co., Ltd.) published our international exchange online meeting held on Dec 2-3, 2021, supported by JST Sakura Science Exchange Program. In the article, Director Tagawa reports the activities of the day as well as discussions on the status and prospects of the international exchange activities under the COVID-19 pandemic.

2021

  • [Oct. 13, 2021] The third-grade students (a group of 14) and their teachers of three at Onomichi City Takami Elementary School came visit MBL and attended the second shore explorations in 2021.
Considering the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was held outdoors only. Children collected various marine organisms in the intertidal zone and observed them.
  • [Aug. 5-7, 2021] Marine course called HU Marine course (a Super Science High School program) of Notre Dame SEISHIN Girls' High School was conducted at the MBL.
Thirteen students and two teachers joined it. The contents are as follows: (1) Collection, observation, and classification of marine organisms in the intertidal zone and sand beach, (2) Collection and microscopic observation of plankton, (3) Collection and observation of luminescent marine organisms, sea firefly.
  • [Aug. 2, 2021] We held a course to renew teacher's licenses entitled "Basics of biological experiments using luminescent marine organisms" under accreditation by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan.
Twenty teachers, including high school and junior high school science teachers and elementary school teachers, participated and took lectures on "biology of luminescent marine organisms" and challenged some basic biological experiments using the sea fireflies.
  • [Jun. 22, 2021] The third-grade students (a group of 14) and their teachers of three at Onomichi City Takami Elementary School came visit MBL and attended the first shore explorations in 2021.
Considering the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was held outdoors only. After learning the cautionary points for fieldwork, children collected various marine organisms in the intertidal zone and observed them.

2020

  • [Feb. 4, 2021] The third-grade students (a group of 19) and their teachers of two at Onomichi City Takami Elementary School visited the MBL and attended the last (third time) shore explorations in 2020.
Children collected algae and seaweeds in the seashore and made bookmarkers using them.
  • [Oct. 18, 2020] We held an online seminar entitled "Basic experiments on bioluminescence and molecular biology using luminescent marine organism, sea firefly" as a Global Science Campus (GSC) Hiroshima the third Step Stage Scientific seminar (biology).
Considering the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the meeting was held online using the Microsoft Teams system. Seventeen high school students participated in the seminar. They learned on the basics of animal experimentation by knowing how to collect the animals, observing morphology under the microscope, and bioluminescent experiment using sea fireflies, one of the marine luminescent organisms that are abundantly distributed in the Seto Inland Sea Area. Furthermore, the students also learned how to extract DNA from the sea firefly and subsequent amplification of specific DNA sequences by Polymerase Chain Reaction as an example of the molecular biology experiment essential in modern biology. Check here for more information about the Global Science Campus.
