Mirai wo Hiraku Chiho Kyoso Platform (Regional Collaboration Platform to Open Up the Future) and Vitae Joint Skill Training Course

This lecture is part of the activities related to the consortium Mirai wo Hiraku Chiho Kyoso Platform (Regional Collaboration Platform to Open Up the Future). The aim is to ensure that the potential researchers who belong to the organizations in the consortium understand the skills that are required for them to succeed in various public fields, and provide support for them to develop their own career. The lecture is held with the cooperation of the UK organization Vitae (*1), a leader in skill and career development support for researchers.
Two experts have been invited through Vitae as lecturers. The following two events will be held: I. For teaching and administrative staff who belong to organizations in the consortium(*2) : a ‘Train the Trainer Seminar’ for Success in Researcher Skill and Career Development (participants will learn the Vitae training methods for effective skill and career development for doctoral students and young researchers), and II. For skill development for doctoral students and young researchers: a Researchers’ Skill and Career Development Seminar. Details are provided below.

I.Train the Trainer Seminar for Success in Researcher Skill and Career Development

The Train the Trainer Seminar is a one-day training session for teaching and administrative staff at universities and other organizations, providing information on Vitae’s methods for plan development, target setting, training implementation, experiential learning and training evaluation. Participants also select one of the three subjects from the II. Researchers’ Skill and Career Development Seminar below, with a maximum of 5 people able to participate in each seminars as instructors. The participants’ performance as instructors is evaluated, and feedback is provided.
* The seminars are held in English. Participants need to be able to understand English.

 II.Researchers’ Skills and Career Development Seminar

This is a three-day training session for doctoral students and young researchers, made up of the three seminars below (see Attachment 2 for syllabus): *The seminar instructors will be speaking in English, but support will be provided by other instructors if required. People who does not belong to the consortium can apply these seminars.

①Career Development Seminar for Researchers

Detail This is a one-day training session for doctoral students and young researchers. Participants in this seminar will learn how to more clearly ascertain the current stage of their own career, and evaluate their own skills and interests. They will also learn how to think about what the next step for them might be, whether or not they want to continue with research and academia or move into another field, and the best way to sell themselves to business operators.

 ②Expert Skill Development Seminar for Researchers

Detail This is a one-day training session for doctoral students and young researchers. Researchers who participate in this seminar will practice training needs analysis and target setting methods. By doing so they will learn how to management their own expert skill development, monitor progress, present evidence of their expert skills to various parties, and effectively communicate those skills. Vitae’s Researcher Development Framework (RDF) and RDF Development Card are used to help the participants to specify, prioritize and assess their key skills. Participants also develop their own action plan.

 ③Pioneering Spirit Training Seminar for Researchers

Detail This seminar is a one-day training session for doctoral students and young researchers. A pioneering attitude and pioneering skills help to enhance creativity, innovative abilities and business sense, aid researchers when conducting research, and are useful for a future career in any field: research or teaching in an institution of higher education, or business, industry or the public sector. No matter what kind of career path a researcher chooses, a pioneering spirit forms the basis for employability, allowing the researcher to exercise unique creativity, bring about change in the workplace, and differentiate him/herself from others. In this seminar, Vitae’s RDF Employability Lens is used to help researchers focus on the skills that are important for them.

(*1)Vitae is managed by the charity organization CRAC (the Careers Research & Advisory Centre), which was established in 1964 in the United Kingdom to provide support for researchers’ career development. In 2003 the UK Program was started and in 2008 the Vitae Program was launched.

(*2)The organization develops and provides skill categorization and self-assessment systems that match researcher’s career stage or future career path, in addition to offering the resources required for skill and career development.

<Profiles of Lecturers>

Dr Jennifer Allanson /Director, TupleSpace

【Academic background】
In 1999 Jennifer became the first full-time female lecturer in Computer Science at Lancaster University. She subsequently moved to a senior lectureship in The School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at LJMU, then held an honorary lectureship in The School of Psychology at LJMU.

Her academic research has been concerned with various aspects of human-computer interaction including virtual reality, computer-supported collaborative work (precursor to social media), ubiquitous computing, interactive art, participatory design and physiological computing.

【Training and Development】

Jennifer has been a training and development consultant for Vitae (https://www.vitae.ac.uk/) since 2000. She was inspired by their commitment and creative approach to training and development and found working with them both rewarding and fulfilling. In 2004, after several years of part-time consulting alongside her full-time job, she decided to leave her academic position and work for herself. In 2005 she spent a year at The University of Manchester as a project officer on the Academic Career Toolkit. This evolved into an online resource called An Academic Career(http://www.academiccareer.manchester.ac.uk/) which later won a Times Higher Education Award (http://www.the-awards.co.uk/) She has delivered more than 100 workshops and training events throughout the UK and in Europe. She has worked with people from around the world and from a diverse range of disciplines. She enjoys sharing good practice between organisations and constantly renewing her own skill set.

Dr Chris Russell / Training and development consultant

【Academic background】
With a keen interest in science, Chris gained a degree in Applied Physics in 1998 and then took a year out for some "real world" experience. On returning to education to undertake a Masters, he found something he was really interested in and decided to study for a PhD in Medical Laser Imaging. Chris' research career included the supervision of PhD and MSc students, and working as an industrial supervisor for the government funded Knowledge Transfer Programme. He collaborated with academics across several disciplines including Physics, Clinical Engineering, Immunology and Electronic Engineering and also clinicians within the NHS. After seven years of PhD, postdoc, project management and presentations, he was looking to find new challenges.

【Training and Development】
In 2007 Chris decided to move from research and started his training business designing and delivering experiential programmes for academics and universities all across the UK. He now runs a freelance training and development consultancy in South West England. He has worked with CRAC /Vitae for nearly 10 years, working as both a tutor and director on their GRAD school and Effective Researcher programmes, coaching on Leadership in Action, and writing course content for Effective Researcher and MakingYour Mark, a new course exploring academic impact. His diverse interests Include leadership, creativity and researcher development. He also provides facilitation to senior research teams to develop strategy, vision and purpose. Chris enjoys using the skills he gained in his academic life to help others develop and excel; whether that's youth groups, postgraduate researchers, research staff or his young son. His interest in thinking, inspiration and creativity extend through his work and life and he is always looking for new ways to learn, both for others and his own benefit.
