2019年6月13日に、下記4会場（広島・徳島）において、未来博士3分間コンペティション大会の事前研修の一環としてプレゼンテーションワークショップが開講されました。大学院生、ポスドクを中心に、合計77 名がさまざまなアクティビティを通してコミュニケーションのスキルを磨きました。

On Thursday, June 13, 2019, the subject workshop was held as a part of the pre-training program for HIRAKU 3MT (Three-Minute Thesis) Competition 2019 as below.  In total 77 master/doctorate/postdoc researchers participated in the workshop to improve their presentation/communication skills through multiple group activities.

3分間コンペティションの本場、クイーンズランド大学に在籍し、3MT大会出場経験を持つ関西大学 外国語学部外国語学科 助教トッド・アレンが講師を務めました。トッドは昨年まで広島大学ライティングセンターにおいてアドバイザーフェローを担当しており、昨年度大会の事前研修からの続投となりました。

Todd Allen, Assistant Professor at Kansai University, facilitated the workshop.  He completed his Ph.D. at University of Queensland, which identified the value of three-minute thesis and spread the competition across the world since 2008.  Todd had been a Writing Fellow at Hiroshima University till 2018, where he did facilitate the pre-training sessions last year as well.

今回のワークショップでは、さまざまな分野からご参加いただいた助教やポスドク研究者の方々に、各グループに分かれてご自身の研究内容について説明していただきました。大学院生の参加者たちは、講師から解説されたワークシートに埋めながら、「研究の内容を分解して解釈・整理する」とはどういうことなのか学びました。
つづいて、スピーチを組み立てるエッセンスについて学び、Activity１で聞き出した研究情報を元に、今度はペア・チームでスピーチを組み立てていきました。
そして3MTで肝となるスライド作成において、絵や写真を有効活用することのポイントを学び、Activity １、２で纏まった情報からチームでスライドをデザインしてみました。
最初は、自分たちの専門外の研究を紐解くのに戸惑っていた参加者も、「研究の中で最も重要な部分は何か」を見極め、それを象徴的に現すスライドをクリエイティブに作成するワークは非常に興味深かったようで、会場全体も非常に盛り上がりました。 ワークショップの成果物として、各チームでデザインしたスライドを共有したところ、それぞれ非常にうまく研究の特徴を掴んだ面白いスライドに仕上がっており、ワークショップから非常に貴重なものを学んだ様子が伺えました。

We asked postdoc researchers and assistant professors to share their research with the graduate students, who learned how to dissect complicated research information into pieces with effective list of questions, filled in the digested/selected information into the dedicated worksheet and constructed speech to make it easily understood by non-subject matter expert audience.  They have also learned effective use of pictures/photos to create a single “appealing” slide, which is one of the core elements of 3MT speech.

For the first activity, they were a little struggling to well understand the postdoc’s research on a different discipline from theirs, but they have gradually started to enjoy identifying “what’s the most important element of the research” and how to create the most effective slide to reflect it.  At the end of the workshop, some groups have shared their designed slides, which were all creative and catching core essense of each research.  It was good evidence of their learning outcome.

また、研究情報を共有してくださった研究者の皆様からも、「自分の研究を客観的に理解できた上、自分のコミュニケーション能力がまだ不足していると実感した。」　「いろいろな専攻の方と交流することができ、大変勉強になった。」など、ポジティブなコメントが寄せられました。
