Courses

Medical and Dental Sciences Course

Dramatic progresses in life science research are remarkably changing medicine, health care, dentistry, and dental care today. For example, expectations for solutions of modern medical issues are growing, through tailor-made medicine based on genetic diagnosis, regenerative medicine, genome-based drug discovery, and application of medical electronics, etc. At the same time, more complex issues are arising, such as changes in the disease structure caused by the combination of declining birthrate and aging, issues of medical ethics, improvements in the quality of patients' life, liaison with welfare engineering, etc. It is difficult for physicians and dentists alone to respond to the quickly expanding medical and dental areas that are, and therefore, interdisciplinary dedication by diverse human resources with different specialty backgrounds is sought.

This master's program accepts students who acquired special knowledge and skills in four-year faculties other than medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine and offers systematic and intensive education to provide basic knowledge in medicine, dentistry, or life sciences, for the purpose of developing people who can contribute to promote the advanced and interdisciplinary researches in medicine, dentistry, or life sciences. It also aims to grow people who can play a key role in fields related to medical care, pharmaceutical industry, and medical engineering by their sophisticated expertise.

Depending on research, students can obtain one of the Master's Degrees;:Medical Science, Dental Science, or Science.

Medical Physics Course

A medical physicist is an occupation of contributing to appropriate radiation therapy practice from the perspective of medical physics specialists, and the recent social situation demands development of qualified human resources in graduate schools.

Hiroshima University established the Medical Physics Course in Medical and Dental Sciences Major in the Graduate School of Biomedical & Health Sciences (Master's Course) in April 2012, to offer suitable education to produce a medical physicist.

In this Medical Physics Course, students follow a curriculum provided along to the medical physics education curriculum guideline for radiation therapies which is proposed by the Japanese Board for Medical Physicist
Qualification (JBMP), and students can receive a master's degree (medical science) at the completion of the Master's Course.

To be certified as a medical physicist, they must receive the training designated by the JBMP and pass a qualification test.

The JBMP started to certify medical physics education courses for radiation therapies offered by graduate schools, and this certificate will be considered as part of the requirements for the students in order to take an examination for becoming a medical physicist after completing the course.

In 2014, the JBMP granted the certificate to this Course of Medical Physics provided by Medical and Dental Sciences Major (Master's Course), Graduate School of Biomedical & Health Sciences Biomedical Sciences, Hiroshima University, as it is satisfied with the designated criteria.

Public Health Course

With changes of the disease structure associated with the social acceleration of super-low birthrate and superaging, and in globalization, the fields of medical care, health care, welfare, and medical administration, require the those who have capabilities to deal with clinical and epidemiological researches for solving problems. They also require health care professionals who can practice evidence-based medicine (EBM) and public health administrative officers who can plan and propose the policies. Among all, those with expertise in public health, including knowledge of epidemiology and biostatistics are strongly demanded.

Hiroshima University established the Public Health Course in Medical and Dental Sciences Major in the Graduate School of Biomedical & Health Sciences (Master's Course) in April 2016 to systematically offer education of the five fields, which serve in line with the international standards for Schools of Public Health: 1) Epidemiology, 2) Biostatistics, 3) Social and Behavioral Sciences, 4) Health Service Administration, and 5) Environmental Health Sciences. We develop people who understand the concept of regulatory science (science that adjusts outcomes of science and technology optimally to the most desirable figures on the harmony between people and the society, by accurately predicting, evaluating, and deciding them on the basis of evidence for the purpose of their use to people and the society) and are appropriately and effectively engaged in the fields of medicine, clinical research, health care policies, health guidance, medical care and international health care, etc.

This course curriculum, which provides compulsory and elective subjects in these five fields, makes students complete a broad range of subjects: such as health statistics, health policy, research methodology / research ethics, clinical epidemiology, clinical forensic medicine, health administration, medical management, international health and environmental health, including epidemiological and biostatistics methods of assessing and evaluating health and disease states in the group. Students who complete the program will receive a Master's Degree of Public Health.
