■ Abstract: Mayors around the world have emerged as influential actors in international politics and have begun to shape global policy debates about a broad range of critical issues from climate change to international security. In this lecture I discuss the longstanding global efforts by the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to promote a vision of a world without nuclear weapons. I critically examine lessons from their experiences over the last four decades and consider some practical implications of these two prominent cases of city diplomacy for peacebuilding.
