My research focuses on sustainable tourism development. For example, I am investigating what kind of merits and problems the recent rapid increase in international tourists in Japan creates for destinations. I am also looking into possibilities for local communities to promote tourism based on their culture and resources rather than “being developed” from outside.
I myself came to Japan as an exchange student many years ago. In the place I lived, I experienced how interesting intercultural exchange can be and how important language is for us. Tourism, my object of research, also is an activity that draws pleasure from the encounters between people and cultures. I hope that IGS will become a place for many encounters and a starting point for new discoveries.
