■ Abstract : In this lecture, the concept of the 'public good' as originally defined by Samuelson in 1954 is introduced to students. The relevance of this concept to universities is explored, considering contemporary issues like climate, equity, social justice, and the knowledge society – under human capital externalities. Various aspects are discussed, including the view of universities as a public good, their contributions to society and individual progress, and appropriate methods of financing them as a public good.
