Department of Urology

Introduction of department

Our work in the department of urology involves the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the urinary tract (kidney, renal pelvis, ureter, bladder, and urethra), the male genital organs (prostate, seminal vesicle, vas deferens, scrotum, testis, and penis), and the adrenal gland. One of the most important aspects of our work is minimally invasive surgery. We have performed laparoscopic surgery for urological diseases since 1991. By using cultivated, high-quality skills, we have established difficult techniques including laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, and laparoendoscopic single-site surgery. We have been performing robot-assisted surgery since May 2010. We were the first to perform such surgery in the Chugoku-Shikoku region of Japan and established the technique. Many urologists nationwide have visited us to learn this technique, and we often visit other hospitals to teach the technique.

Currently, the focus of our education and basic research is to clarify the molecular mechanism of the development and progression of urological cancer. We have also collaborated with many laboratories to enable basic researchers to perform our work more widely and with higher quality.

Our ultimate aim is to contribute to society through 1) the promotion of minimally invasive surgery, 2) the translation of research work into clinical practice and the establishment of novel therapeutic and diagnostic strategies, and 3) the cultivation of urologists with not only the ability to perform high-quality techniques and specialized knowledge but also excellent human nature.
