Department of Clinical and Molecular Genetics

Information of Departmemt

We perform genetic diagnosis and genetic counseling in cooperation with each clinical division, including the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Department of Pediatrics, the Department of Neurology, the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery, the Department of Breast Surgery, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, the Department of Ophthalmology, and the Department of General Internal Medicine. Fifteen specialists of clinical genetics in each medical department, one exclusive certified genetic counselor and one midwife (who also works as midwife in the patients’ ward) play a major role in providing medical service to outpatients twice a week (Monday and Tuesday) by appointment only. Along with the progress of gene analysis, the types and number of illnesses for which genetic counseling can be indicated have been increasing. We take sufficient time for and give information necessary for counseling to patients and their family members regarding their genetic concerns, and give medical and emotional support to realize the best decision for all of them. Genetic experts and certified counselors respond mainly to all congenital anomalies including abnormal chromosomes, undiagnosed cases, intractable neurological diseases, hereditary tumors, and familial tumors. We have also begun to deal with cancer genomic medicine, and to establish a collaboration system with experts from other departments.
