Introduction of departments

 Department of Gastroenterology and Metabolism, Division of Gastroenterology is responsible for a wide variety of target organs, including the gastrointestinal tract, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. We treat about 45,000 patients per year. We have 3 laboratories which specialize in the liver, the biliopancreatic system, and the gastrointestinal tract respectively. Liaising among these 3 laboratories, we aim to make a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment, without each laboratory remaining isolated in its own specialized area. To treat gastrointestinal disease we consider it important to cooperate closely with doctors in other divisions, and we collaborate with the Department of Transplantation Surgery, the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery, the Division of Clinical Care, the Division of Radiology and so on and try to provide highly qualified medical treatment. In our many research activities, including clinical trials, clinical research and basic research, we collaborate with many medical facilities nationwide.

Laboratory for Hepatology Research
 Viral Hepatitis, cirrhosis, carcinoma of liver, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, fatty liver, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, gastroesophageal varices, acute liver failure, etc.
Laboratory for Pancreas Research
 Carcinoma of pancreas, biliary cancer, bile duct cancer, cystic fibrosis of the pancreas, acute pancreatitis, autoimmune pancreatitis, cholecystitis, cholangitis, cholelithiasis, etc.
Laboratory for Research of the Gastrointestinal Tract
 Carcinoma of the esophagus, carcinoma of the stomach, bowel cancer, lymphoma malignum, various kinds of alimentary canal tumor, esophagitis, gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcer, disease of the small bowel, inflammatory bowel disease, functional gastrointestinal tract disturbance, etc.

  1. Exploration of factors relating to antiviral effect for viral hepatitis
  2. Construction of evaluation system of drug efficacy by use of human hepatocyte chimeric mice
  3. Elucidation of molecular mechanism of NAFLD/NASH and exploration of new therapies for it

Laboratory for Pancreas Research

Clinical research

  1. Searching of markers for early recognition of post-ERCP pancreatitis
  2. Evaluation of effects of stent for pancreatic duct to prevent post-ERCP pancreatitis
  3. Construction of new intubation with guidewire used at the time of ERCP
  4. Evaluation of concurrent chemoradiotherapy used with anticancer drug other than Gem/S-1 to treat with advanced pancreatic cancer
  5. Endoscopic treatment for malignant duodenal stenosis

Basic research

  1. Searching of diagnostic marker for pancreatic cancer by use of clinical specimen and cell line of pancreatic cancer
  2. Elucidation of mechanism of pancreatic cancer development by use of cell line of pancreatic cancer

  1. Construction of diagnostic morphology in cancer in the digestive tract by use of high-magnification endoscopic surveillance with Image Enhanced Endoscopy (IEE) such as NBI/FICE and so on
  2. Molecular pathologic and immunological analyses by use of endoscopic resection specimens
  3. Development of new endoscopic instruments and erection of new method of image analysis by academic-industrial cooperation
  4. Research on new endoscopic diagnosis and therapeutic technique and development of instruments
  5. Development of diagnostics of gastrointestinal tract with external ultrasound
  6. Medication to treat diseases of gastrointestinal tract

  1. Elucidation of mechanism of development, invasion and metastasis of gastrointestinal tract tumor and cancer and therapeutic application of the findings
  2. Elucidation of pathological conditions of inflammatory bowel disease
  3. Molecular biological analysis of Helicobacter pylori related disease
  4. Relevance between gastrointestinal hormone, secretion of acid and NO production and chronic inflammation of gastrointestinal tract
