Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery

Introduction of department

ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), also known as Otorhinolaryngology, is the specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ear (external, middle, and inner ear), the nose (nasal and paranasal cavity), the throat (pharynx and larynx), the mouth (oral cavity and tongue) head, face, and neck (trachea and esophagus).

Our division provides diagnoses and treatments for disorders of head and neck cancer, vertigo, smell disturbance, taste disorders, voice disorders, speech impediment and snoring including both medical and surgical therapeutic modalities.
We have specialty outpatient clinics including head and neck tumor, thyroid surgery, tinnitus, voice and language, ingestion and deglutition, sleep apnea syndrome, olfaction, nose, paranasal sinus and allergic diseases. We can manage any of the diseases that will need surgical intervention in the head and neck region. We perform cochlear implant and language rehabilitation after surgery for hearing impaired patients since 1992.

Throughout the management of the diseases we emphasize an clinical policy of patient-oriented approaches and cordial hospitality for any needing patient.

Research content

We use a wide range of research tools to explore the structure, function and pathological condition of various related fields. There are a variety of clinical and basic science research projects planned or underway in rhinology, allergology, and anterior skull base surgery. They also include factors that associate with refractory eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis, allergic rhinitis, regulatory functions of NO in the upper airway.

Researchers in our department also explore the pathophysiology of chronic otitis media and cholesteatoma. Our department had an excellent advance in basic research in inner ear biology and translational medicine discovering novel molecular insights and potential new therapies for the treatment of inner ear disorders focusing on hearing loss. One of those topics was recently published in Ear and Hearing as Effects of Cerebral Blood Flow and Vessel Conditions on Speech Recognition in Patients With Postlingual Adult Cochlear Implant: Predictable Factors for the Efficacy of Cochlear Implant. Molecular biology methods are utilized to invent therapies for age-related inner ear disorders and Meniere’s disease.

Head and neck oncology research is in progress by our multidisciplinary team, composed of surgeons, radiation physicists, and cancer pathologists.

Treatment achievements

A variety of surgical procedures managed by skilled surgeons in our department enable us to cover the treatment of most diseases in ENT area as we consider it a sworn duty to provide the patients with adequate therapeutic options.

We performed over 1,100 operations in 2016. Tympanoplasty; 30 cases, cochlear implant; 20 cases, endoscopic nasal and sinus surgery; 92 cases, posterior nasal neurectomy; 21 cases, head and neck cancer operation; 95 cases, neck dissection; 67 cases, skull base surgery; 3 cases.
