International industry-government-academia collaboration

Hiroshima University’s initiatives for international industry-government-academia collaboration and recent activities

1) Promotion of collaboration in Latin American region

  • Hiroshima University (HU) signed interuniversity agreements with the University of Guanajuato (UGTO), Mexico (2015), the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico (IPN) (2017), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) (2017), the National University of Colombia (UNAL) (2018), the National University of San Marcos (UNMSM), Peru (2018), and the Private University of Technology of Santa Cruz (UTEPSA), Bolivia (2018). HU will work to improve its interorganizational collaboration with universities and private companies in Latin America.
  • HU invited its four partner universities in Latin America to the “2018 Global Innovation Week in Hiroshima,” where various events were held by HU, including symposiums about industry-academia collaboration and entrepreneurial education, and a pitch contest which HU holds to encourage generation of university start-ups. HU also founded the Global First Penguin Club (GIPEC), with the aim of building a global network to promote entrepreneurial education and start-up generation.
  • HU opened the Hiroshima University Guanajuato Center (2017) and the Hiroshima University Mexico Center (2019), at UGTO and UNAM, respectively. The two centers will serve as HU’s information bases to promote its industry-academia collaboration in Latin America.
  • HU held seminars about the environment and diet at UG (2017, 2018, and 2019) and IPN (2017 and 2019).
  • Under the JICA Mexico-Japan Training Program for Strategic Global Partnership, HU has accepted eight trainees from Mexico: three in 2017 and five in 2019. In 2020, five trainees are expected to start the training.

2) Promotion of collaboration in Asia

  • In a Japanese industry park in Indonesia, HU has continued to organize workshops for local engineers, in cooperation with its partner institute, the Bandung Institute of Technology.
  • In Vietnam, HU hosted a seminar on the environment (2016) and food and agriculture (2017), with the cooperation of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (HU’s Vietnamese partner university, where HU established its information base in Vietnam), Hiroshima Prefectural government, HU’s partner companies, etc.
  • In 2016, HU started to organize an industry-government-academia collaboration seminar in Myanmar, in collaboration with its partner companies, local government agencies, and local universities. Since then, the seminar has been continuously held, on the themes of local social problems, such as transportation, soil, and environmental problems associated with urban development (in 2016, 2017 and 2018).
  • HU, Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and Nanyang Technology University co-organized industry-government-academia collaboration seminars in Hiroshima (2017) and Singapore (2018 and 2019).
  • HU signed an interuniversity partnership agreement with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, in 2017. In addition, in the same year, HU concluded a comprehensive partnership agreement with an Indian company, under which collaborative research and employee training programs have been conducted.

3) Promotion of collaboration in Europe and America

  • Since 2015, HU has invited lecturers from the University of Cambridge (CU) to give lectures on industry-government-academia collaboration. CU performed benchmarking studies from the viewpoints of entrepreneurial education and ecosystem formation.
  • HU will work to develop a framework for collaboration with European and American companies.

4) Supporting Japanese companies actively expanding overseas
