On March 8th, 2024, Dr. Christopher Nomura, Vice President for Research and Economic Development of the University of Idaho (U of I), U.S.A., one of Hiroshima University’s international exchange partner universities, and his delegation visited HU and engaged in a meeting with HU President Mitsuo Ochi. HU Executive Vice President for Global Initiatives, Shinji Kaneko, was also in attendance. During the meeting, participants exchanged opinions on the possibility of large-scale student exchange.
The delegation from U of I also participated in the NERPS 2024 Conference, which was held at HU’s Higashi-Hiroshima Campus as well as Higashi Hiroshima Arts & Culture Hall Kurara during March 6th to 9th as part of the Hiroshima University 75+75th Anniversary Project. During their parallel session titled, “Implementing Sustainability and Peace Initiatives: Administrative Perspectives on Success and Challenges at the University of Idaho,” Vice President Nomura, Dean Sean Quinlan (College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences), and Dean Dennis Becker (College of Natural Resources), gave a presentation about their university’s accomplishments and conducted a lively exchange of opinions. During their visit to HU, they also embarked on a campus tour that included the Hiroshima Synchrotron Radiation Center and Hiroshima University Museum, and participated in an exchange meeting for researchers in the fields of information science and natural resource management. The participants in the meeting included Dean Ishii of the Graduate School of Innovation and Practice for Smart Society; Vice Director Mukaidani, Professor Yamada, and Associate Professor Andrade of the Education and Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Innovation; Professor Koike and Professor Yamada of the Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Life; and Professor Onodera of the Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering. The participants engaged in discussions on future possibilities for joint research and personnel exchange.
HU has concluded 25 inter-university international exchange agreements with 24 institutions and 25 inter-faculty international exchange agreements with 24 institutions in the U.S. Currently, there are 10 students from the U.S. studying at HU. This visit is expected to promote exchange with the University of Idaho as well as other universities and research institutions in the U.S.
