On September 24, 2024, a delegation led by H.E. Mr. Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Minister of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia, paid a courtesy visit to the Higashi-Hiroshima Campus of Hiroshima University (HU) and met with HU President Mitsuo Ochi, Executive Vice President (Global Initiatives) Shinji Kaneko, and Executive Vice President (Research) Seiichi Miyazaki.
After the courtesy call, Minister Kartasasmita gave a lecture titled “Examining Future Prospects: Establishing a Framework For Economic And Social Diplomacy Between Indonesia and Japan” to an audience of about 120 people, including faculty, staff, and students of HU, as well as participants from Japanese companies, the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia, and the Embassy of Indonesia. The audience listened attentively to the end.
After the lecture, an honorary doctorate conferral ceremony was held, in which President Ochi presented Minister Kartasasmita with an honorary doctoral certificate, to which the audience gave a resounding applause. The awarding of this honorary doctoral degree underscores Minister Kartasasmita’s significant contributions to Japanese industry and HU, as well as the importance of the Republic of Indonesia as a partner to HU. Among these contributions to Japanese industry, Minister Kartasasmita has played an important role in promoting Japanese investment in Indonesia, increasing exports to Japan, developing industrial parks, technology transfer, and EV development.
As a contribution to education and research at HU, an agreement was signed on September 6, 2024 between HU and the Indonesian Ministry of Industry for a scholarship program, under which HU will host five administrative officers from Indonesia per year. This initiative, for which the Ministry of Industry will provide scholarships, is expected to contribute to the development of human resources in the Indonesian Ministry of Industry and strengthen the human network between HU and Indonesian government agencies and industries.
HU has concluded 29 inter-university international exchange agreements with 25 institutions and 50 inter-faculty international exchange agreements with 47 institutions in Indonesia. Currently, 113 students from Indonesia are studying at HU. In 2022, HU also established the Hiroshima University Alumni Association Indonesia (HUAA-Indonesia) as an alumni organization covering all of Indonesia, and has positioned Indonesia as a strategically important country in the university's overseas expansion. We hope that this visit will be an opportunity to further strengthen ties between HU and Indonesia in terms of student exchange, government agencies, and industry.
