Mikael Kai NOMURA and Moe ASANO, both second-year master’s students in the International Education Development Program within the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, have been selected for this prestigious program jointly launched by MEXT and UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
Mr. Nomura will begin his one-year internship at the Education Unit of the UNESCO Liaison Office to the United Nations in New York in January 2026, while Ms. Asano will start her internship at the Education Unit of the UNESCO Office in Cairo in October 2025, also for a one-year period.
The “UNESCO Training Program” was established in FY2024 based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed between MEXT (Japanese National Commission for UNESCO) and UNESCO Headquarters. The program offers long-term internships (typically 6 to 12 months) at UNESCO Headquarters or field offices worldwide to outstanding Japanese graduate students. Its goals are to foster understanding of UNESCO activities in Japan, develop globally competent professionals including future international civil servants, and promote regional revitalization through UNESCO initiatives.
The program is open to 12 universities in Japan that host a UNESCO Chair or are part of the UNITWIN Network. At Hiroshima University, the Global Management Group in the International Office serves as the contact point for applicants.
Recruitment for the FY2026 cohort is expected to begin in the fall. All graduate students at Hiroshima University, regardless of their field of study, are eligible to apply.
