Peacebuilders from around the world gather in Hiroshima

FY2025 Program for Global Human Resource Development for Peacebuilding and Development – Primary Course, commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan

Dates: October 12 (Sun) – November 30 (Sun), 2025

As part of the Program for Global Human Resource Development for Peacebuilding and Development, commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hiroshima University will conduct the Primary Course from October 12 to November 30, 2025, in cooperation with UNITAR and UNV. This course is designed for individuals who aspire to build careers in peacebuilding and international development.

Peacebuilders from Japan, Armenia, Cambodia, Cameroon, Ecuador, Guatemala, Iraq, Nepal, Palestine, Papua New Guinea, South Sudan, Timor-Leste, and the African Union Commission will undertake the training in Tokyo, Hiroshima City and Hiroshima University’s Higashi-Hiroshima Campus.

In addition to lectures and participatory workshops, the program includes open discussions and career guidance, enabling participants to acquire the practical knowledge and skills needed to succeed in peacebuilding and development.

Numerous domestic and international experts such as Ms. Akiko Yuge, former UN Assistant Secretary-General and Director of Management Bureau at UNDP Headquarters in New York, will lead the sessions and provide expert guidance.

After this 4-week training course, the Japanese program associates will be dispatched as UN Volunteers to various UN offices worldwide for a period of one year to put into practice what they learned in Japan. On November 14 (Friday), the program associates will visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and hear the testimony of atomic bomb survivor Ms. Keiko Ogura, giving them a valuable opportunity to learn about Hiroshima’s reconstruction process and its efforts toward peacebuilding.

As Hiroshima commemorates 80 years since the end of World War II, this initiative—developed in partnership with UN agencies—stands as a vital effort to support the next generation of peacebuilders to advance the ideals of peace on a global scale.
