Hiroshima University has been developing educational content for publication on the Japan Virtual Campus (JV-Campus), an international online learning platform, which was selected for the Inter-University Exchange Project by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
We are pleased to announce the release of two new free online courses in the marine & maritime fields:
“Oceans and maritime affairs that support the lives, safety and security of people around the world” (liberal arts course), and
“Introduction of Ocean and Maritime Engineering” (specialised engineering course).
These courses provide introductory-level learning opportunities in the marine & maritime fields. They aim to deepen students’ knowledge and skills, serve as an entry point to more specialised study, and support the development of advanced professionals in these fields.
To promote international learning, both courses include English subtitles, enabling access not only for international students but also for Japanese students wishing to enhance their English-language study experience.
Furthermore, the courses are designed to be useful not only for undergraduate and graduate students but also for working professionals seeking to update or expand their knowledge.
Both courses are available free of charge.
Anyone can create an account on the JV-Campus website, select “Hiroshima University” from the list of institutions, and enroll in the courses.
(Please note: For general viewers, there is no requirement to take quizzes or submit written assignments—these are intended for Hiroshima University students only.)
If you are interested, we encourage you to explore the content.

About the JV-Campus (Japan Virtual Campus)
JV-Campus is an online education platform established as part of MEXT’s Forum for the Internationalisation of Universities initiative.
Participating institutions include universities in Japan and abroad, as well as members of industry, with the aim of strengthening global higher education, expanding learning opportunities, and fostering international exchange.
About the Inter-University Exchange Project
The Inter-University Exchange Project aims to nurture global human resources who aim to work on the international stage and strengthen the global outreach of Japanese universities by promoting collaboration and student exchange with universities in designated countries and regions. The project provides financial support to universities that develop and conduct student exchange programs for Japanese and foreign students, as well as the construction of high-quality educational programs that are internationally recognized.
The courses introduced in this announcement were developed with support from the FY2023 (supplementary budget) program “Frontiers of Marine & Maritime Engineering Linking Asia and the World – Peaceful Use of the Seas and Sustainable Development.”
This project creates comprehensive introductory educational content in the marine & maritime fields, consisting of one liberal arts course and one specialised course, produced in English and made available worldwide on JV-Campus. It aims to contribute to the development of highly skilled personnel, particularly in ASEAN countries, including marine & maritime engineers and government officials responsible for maritime security, coast guard operations, and marine policy.
