On April 27, 2026, President Mitsuo Ochi of Hiroshima University (HU) visited the Ministry of Education and Technical Education in Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt, and paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Mohamed Abdel Latif, Minister of Education and Technical Education. The meeting was attended on the Egyptian side by officials including Hanem Ahmed, Minister's Advisor for International Cooperation, Ministry of Education and Technical Education. Representing HU, Executive Vice President for Global Initiatives Shinji Kaneko and Professor Kazuhiro Kusahara of the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences also attended the meeting.
During the meeting, the participants exchanged views broadly on deepening educational cooperation between Japan and Egypt and promoting the introduction of Japanese-style education in Egypt. Minister Abdel Latif expressed the view that Japanese-style education plays an important role in the educational reforms being promoted by the Egyptian government. He also conveyed his appreciation for the collaboration with HU to date and expressed strong expectations for further cooperation in a wide range of areas, including teacher training and the development of highly skilled human resources.
Furthermore, the Minister made reference to the educational cooperation agreement on the AI and programming curriculum concluded last October among HU, the Egyptian Ministry of Education, and SPRIX Inc. Noting that more than one million Egyptian high school students had already taken the examination, he expressed his expectations for further expansion of the initiative in the future.
In response, President Ochi noted that collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Technical Education has steadily deepened since their meeting at TICAD 9 last year. He also expressed his appreciation to all those involved for making it possible to conclude new agreements on teacher training and financial literacy education, following the trilateral agreement signed in October last year. President Ochi further stated that HU would continue to actively contribute to teacher training and the development of highly skilled human resources in Egypt by drawing upon the University’s expertise in Japanese-style education.
Finally, both sides agreed to continue promoting close collaboration and cooperation in the future. It is expected that international cooperation between Japan and Egypt in the fields of education and research will be further strengthened, leading to significant progress in improving the quality of education and fostering the next generation of human resources in Egypt.
