On December 3, 2011, the inaugural meeting for the Hiroshima University Brazil Alumni Association was held at the Hiroshima Culture Center in Sao Paulo, Brazil. About 30 alumni participated in this event.
On that day, before the meeting, Executive and Vice President Okamoto explained our university’s support for Fukushima, especially the efforts of the Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine and the hospital, by holding a lecture on “The Actual Condition of the Fukushima Nuclear Plant and the Support of Hiroshima University”.
Following that, the inaugural meeting was held, and Mr. Hiromi Ohnishi (Chairman of Hiroshima-kenjin Kai and Hiroshima prefecture-sponsored foreign student of 1972), was elected as the first president of the Brazil Alumni Association. Afterward, there was a reception, where old friends were able to meet for the first time in a long while and talked excitedly about the good old days as students. In the end, they finished the meeting by singing the school song of HU together.
Furthermore, on December 1, also at the Hiroshima Culture Center, there was an orientation meeting on new technologies at HU and representatives from local enterprises, University of Sao Paulo and Japan-Brazilian-Associations (altogether about 20 people), took part. The target of this orientation meeting was particularly individuals directly related to companies, who are interested in industry-university cooperation and new technologies; the fruit of HU’s research efforts.
After Director Hyodo from JETRO Sao Paulo’s speech, Executive and Vice President Okamoto told about our university’s research achievements in the field of life science. The participants were highly interested in the subject, and during the questions-and-answer period had a lively exchange of views.
Hiroshima University established the Hiroshima University Brazil Center in Sao Paulo City in 2009. Since then, academic and student exchange with Brazil and industry-university cooperation have been actively promoted, and it is hoped that the establishment of the Brazil Alumni Association and the orientation meeting on new technologies at HU will further advance exchange activities.
