HU participates in the May Festival at USSH

On May 26 2012, Hiroshima University participated in the May Festival held at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, in Ho Chi Minh City (USSH).

HU established the Hiroshima University Vietnam Center in USSH in 2010 aiming to promote educational and academic exchange with Vietnam, and actively cooperated with USSH to hold the May Festival.

About 400 students attended this event. At the beginning of the opening ceremony, a welcome address was delivered by the President of USSH, Vo Van Sen. Subsequently, the Consulate General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City delivered a welcome address, then Nguyen Tien Luc (President of the HU Vietnam Alumni Association), the Chairman of the Japanese Studies Department hosting this event, introduced the guests and explained the festival. Afterward, several events were held such as a self-discovery program as part of Career Education, songs and dances performance by students wearing Kimono or dressed up like Japanese animation characters, a Japanese essay contest, and a scholarship award ceremony. From HU, as an introduction to Japanese culture, Dr. Ogura from the International Center delivered a lecture titled “Furoshiki and the Japanese way of life”, and explained the traditional Japanese Furoshiki and demonstrated how to use it.

Not only that, an exhibition booth for introducing study in Japan and Japanese culture etc. was set up during the lunch hour, and the HU staff introduced Hiroshima University and gave explanations about studying in Japan.

HU conducts the START Program that targets first year undergraduate students to give them the experience of study abroad. Every year, about 20-30 HU students are dispatched to USSH, attend lectures held by local teaching staff and actively promote student exchange. In the future, we hope to strengthen mutual exchange even more through participation in the May Festival and the START Program.
