Hiroshima University Peace Project was held

On 6th August 2019, Hiroshima University Peace Project was held at Higashi-Senda Innovative Research Center. This event has been held every year on August 6th since 2017 to realize one of the founding principles “The Pursuit of Peace” and to hand down the atomic bomb experience to the next generation. This year saw the unveiling ceremony of a violin, which is made from parts that came from a tree that survived the atomic bombing. The violin’s ribs are made of wood from a tree that was located on the site in Ninoshima Island, where many atomic-bomb victims were buried.

After the opening remarks from President Ochi, the violin was unveiled, and Mr. Kayo (a researcher at HU) in charge of the event explained the concept of the violin project. Towards the end of the event, Ms. Hinako Wakinaka, a second-year student at the School of Dentistry of HU, played the violin.

Following that, a mini concert entitled “Prayer and Hope” was held by the students at School of Education Program in Music Culture Education expressing their sentiment for peace through their performance.
After the mini-concert, international students and Japanese students gathered around the violin, exchanging ideas for peace. The session in the afternoon saw the special lecture of the Peace Center entitled “Peace – What the Peace Science Courses of Hiroshima University aim for.”

Hopefully, the violin made for this project will be played by as many violinists at various concerts as possible from now on, and the sound of the violin will encourage more people to share a desire for peace.
