On August 25, 2020, a certificate award ceremony for the Hiroshima University Morito Institute of Global Higher Education 3+1 Program was held at the Higashi-Hiroshima campus, with six of the 26 third-year students participating in the event. In his congratulatory address, President Mitsuo Ochi expressed his appreciation to the students for their great efforts in living and studying in a different environment from their country and encouraged them not to forget to show gratitude to the professors and family members who supported their study abroad in Japan, as well as to hope for the future success of the graduating students.

Next, Mr. Ahmed Amer, a representative of the graduating students, reflected on his year in Japan and thanked his teaching advisors for their support. Mr. Amer expressed his renewed determination commenting, “When I came to Japan, I experienced living alone for the first time in my life, and all my teachers and friends were like a family to me. When I next return to Japan, I intend to challenge myself to do things that I was not able to do in the past year”.

In order to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, the convivial party, usually held every year after the ceremony, has been called off this year. However, President Ochi has kindly arranged to provide lunch boxes prepared in the university cafeteria to the graduating students.

※This program accepts students who have completed their junior or sophomore year at universities abroad, such as those in China, as special audit students, and provides them with specialized education and guidance for their graduation theses to be submitted to the universities from which they were sent. Hiroshima University is also working to prepare an academic environment for foreign research students who have completed the program, allowing them to progress to graduate school at the university. The name of the program is derived from the founding spirit of Tatsuo Morito, the first president of Hiroshima University, which was “one free and peaceful university”.
