HU graduate now teaching at Cairo University translates manga 'Barefoot Gen' into Arabic

Mr. Maher El-Sherbini

Mr. Maher El-Sherbini, a graduate of Hiroshima University and professor in the Department of Japanese Language and Literature, Faculty of Arts, at Cairo University, has finished translating all 10 volumes of the manga "Barefoot Gen" into Arabic.

Barefoot Gen is a Japanese manga that depicts the horrors of war through the desperate struggle of its main character, Gen Nakaoka, to survive the aftermath of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima. Mr. Maher was a specially appointed professor at Hiroshima University from 2015 to 2016, and during his time in Japan, he had been translating the manga to convey the devastation of the atomic bombing to children in Arabic-speaking countries.

After completing the translation of all the volumes, Mr. Maher commented, "It took seven years, but I am relieved that I was able to complete the translation and publish the entire volume while I was still in good health. I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone at Hiroshima University for their support in the translation process, especially the former President Toshimasa Asahara, Professor Yoshinobu Imada of the Graduate School of Letters, and Visiting Professor Michio Sato, who is a specialist in the Arabic language. I am happy to be able to contribute to the spread of peace throughout the world."
