HU contributes to Ukraine relief efforts through Japanese Red Cross Society

Hiroshima University donated over 5 million yen for Ukraine crisis relief through the Hiroshima branch of the Japanese Red Cross Society.

Hiroshima University donated 5,586,826 yen to the Hiroshima branch of the Japanese Red Cross Society last April 11 as part of an on-campus fundraising initiative for humanitarian aid to Ukraine after Russia's armed invasion.

As a university in the A-bombed city that experienced the horrors of war, Hiroshima University was quick to issue a President's Appeal on February 25 — the day after the invasion of Ukraine began — protesting the armed invasion and calling for a peaceful resolution. In addition, from February 28 to March 31, an emergency on-campus fundraising campaign was held for faculty, staff, and students to raise funds for humanitarian aid.

During this period, a total of 5,586,826 yen was raised including donations from companies and organizations related to Hiroshima University. The money was collected through donation boxes set up on campus and through the university departments. On April 11, Junko Tanaka, Executive Vice President of Hiroshima University, visited the Hiroshima Branch of the Japanese Red Cross Society and handed the donation to its Director-General Hiroaki Sakai.

Executive Vice President Tanaka stated, "We hope that students, faculty, and staff will send their feelings toward the people of Ukraine along with the donation.”

The donation will be used by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and other organizations for relief operations to support the displaced people in Ukraine and neighboring countries.
