[G7] HU President Ochi Meets with H.E. Mr. PHAM Minh Chinh, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam

On May 20, 2023, Hiroshima University (HU) President Mitsuo Ochi met with H.E. Mr. PHAM Minh Chinh, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, who was visiting Japan to participate in the G7 Hiroshima Summit. The meeting was also attended by Executive Vice President of Global Initiatives, Shinji Kaneko, Executive Vice President in charge of Kasumi Campus, Faculty Personnel and Public Relations, Junko Tanaka, Professor Tran Dang Xuan (the IDEC Institute) as well as representatives from companies including President Kazuhisa Matsumoto of Satake Corporation and President Tetsuro Yamasaka of Balcom Co Ltd.

During the meeting, President Ochi informed the participants that Vietnamese students studying at HU make up the third biggest group of students, currently standing at 65, with 343 alumni, and that there are alumni associations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. He also mentioned that HU is preparing to set up a satellite campus for doctoral course students in the field of agriculture in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Viet Nam, and plans to promote research focusing on DX (digital transformation) in agriculture, upgrading of the livestock industry, and rice cultivation resistant to drought and salt damage, as well as providing executive education for senior-level administrative officials in the Ministry of Home Affairs of Viet Nam. Lastly, he informed the participants that he would like to focus on human resource development in the four areas of agriculture, semiconductors, carbon neutrality, and smart cities in cooperation with Japanese companies operating in Viet Nam, and that he would like to proactively accept excellent students from Viet Nam.

In response, Prime Minister Chinh stated that agriculture, digital transformation (DX), and green transformation (GX) are all important strategic fields for Viet Nam, praised the efforts of HU, and expressed his hope that HU would establish an education and research center in Viet Nam. He expressed his determination to take prompt action through the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan and other relevant ministries and agencies if any necessary coordination and support were required.

HU will continue to actively promote further exchanges with Vietnamese universities, government agencies, and businesses.
