“Supercritical water gasification of xylose using ruthenium-catalyst supported on carbon nanotube”

Global warming is due to the use of fossil fuels and use of renewable energy is expected as an alternative to it. Biomass conversion technologies are very important because biomass is renewable and carbon neutral. Wet biomass has a high water content so that heat is used to evaporate when burning. However, supercritical water gasification does not require a drying process.  Therefore, it is very effective method for the wet biomass.  Xylose is one of the model compounds of hemicellulose.  Experiments were conducted in a continuous reactor with 0.01 kg/kg xylose at 450 degrees C, 25 MPa.  Ru/CNT is also found to be effective in the supercritical water gasification of xylose.  Xylose is almost completely degraded at a residence time of 1.8 s. The catalyst may have caused the acetic acid to be gasified quickly.

Lecture: Akihiro HIDENO
Lecturer, Paper Industry Innovation Center, Ehime University
“Producing technologies of paper and cellulose nanofibers from herbaceous and local waste biomass and their applications”

Biorefinery technologies using herbaceous biomass and waste biomass, which are currently underutilized, are important for the formation of a sustainable recycling society in the future. In this seminar, we will introduce the technology to obtain pulps from herbaceous biomass such as rice straw and Miscanthus plants in a short time without heating, the physical properties of paper made from them, and their potential for agricultural use. The presentation will also introduce the preparation technology, properties, and applications of cellulose nanofibers prepared from waste biomass, mainly citrus peels in Ehime prefecture.
