On June 9, 2025, President Mitsuo Ochi and Executive Vice President for Global Initiatives Shinji Kaneko of Hiroshima University (HU) visited Comenius University Bratislava, Slovak Republic, and held a signing ceremony for an inter-university international exchange agreement.

This agreement will promote collaboration in education and research in the fields of medicine, law, natural sciences, and East Asian studies, and is expected to further develop student exchange and joint research between the two universities.

At the signing ceremony, the delegation from HU received a warm welcome from Comenius University Bratislava officials, including Rector Marek Števček and Vice-Rector Jozef Tancer. The participants expressed their deep appreciation to H.E. Mr. Ayman Aly Kamel, former Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Japan and current Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Slovak Republic, for his great efforts in making this agreement possible. Also present at the ceremony was H.E. Mr. Yasuhiro Kawakami, Ambassador of Japan to the Slovak Republic, who offered words of encouragement regarding the significance of academic exchange between Japan and Slovakia.

After the signing ceremony, the delegation from HU visited the Japanese Language Department and had specific discussions regarding the acceptance of international students at HU through the Hiroshima University 3+1 Program.

It is hoped that this agreement will further deepen the relationship of trust between the two universities and stimulate academic and cultural exchange between Japan and Slovakia.
