On July 3, 2026, Executive Vice President (Global Initiatives) Shinji Kaneko of Hiroshima University (HU) was invited to speak at the Trans-Altai Sustainability Dialogue 2026, an international conference held at the Government Palace in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The conference was co-hosted by the Secretariat of the State Great Khural of Mongolia, the Ban Ki-moon Foundation for a Better Future, and the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC) at Stanford University. Under the theme "SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals," participants discussed approaches to international cooperation aimed at achieving a sustainable society.

The conference brought together Ban Ki-moon, the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations; Gombojav Zandanshatar, the 34th Prime Minister of Mongolia; researchers from universities and research institutions around the world, including Stanford University and Yonsei University; as well as government officials and leaders from international organizations and industry. Drawing on their respective areas of expertise, participants exchanged views on policies and international collaboration for a sustainable future. The conference featured four thematic sessions: "Artificial Intelligence, Technology and Inclusive Innovation," "Critical Minerals, Mining and Green Technology," "Women's Leadership and Empowerment," and "Democracy and Civil Participation."

Executive Vice President Kaneko participated in Session 2: AI, Technology and Inclusive Innovation, where he joined Mongolian government officials and researchers from overseas in discussing the role of AI and advanced technologies in addressing societal challenges. In his presentation, he introduced HU's educational and research initiatives related to peace and sustainability and shared relevant efforts being undertaken in both Hiroshima and Mongolia. He emphasized that AI should be used not merely as a means of enhancing efficiency and competitiveness, but as a technology for advancing peace, inclusivity, sustainability, and responsible innovation.

During the conference, Executive Vice President Kaneko also exchanged views with former Prime Minister Zandanshatar, government officials from various countries, representatives of universities, and members of international organizations. In his meeting with Mr. Zandanshatar, EVP Kaneko invited him to visit Hiroshima and exchanged views on the importance of international collaboration in peacebuilding through higher education, human resource development, and the realization of a sustainable society.

HU upholds "the pursuit of peace" as one of its guiding principles. The University will continue to further advance education, research, and contributions to society through partnerships with universities, governments, and international organizations around the world, thereby contributing to the realization of a peaceful and sustainable society.
