What is the Hiroshima University 3+1 Program?
This program is designed for students who have completed their second or third year of undergraduate studies at their home universities, allowing them to enroll at Hiroshima University as Special Auditing Students. Participants receive specialized education and research guidance in preparing their graduation theses, which will be submitted to their home universities.
Students interested in pursuing studies in Japanese are encouraged to apply for the "Morito Institute of Global Higher Education 3+1 Program," while those preferring instruction in English should consider "The IDEC Institute 3+1 Program." However, please note that "The IDEC Institute 3+1 Program" is exclusively available to students who have completed the third year of their undergraduate studies at overseas universities.
What courses are available in the 3+1 Program?
You can choose from undergraduate-level courses offered at Hiroshima University, provided that you obtain approval from the course instructors. Detailed course syllabi are available at the following link:

However, please note that enrolment is not permitted if:
・The course has reached its maximum capacity.

How are credits recognized and transferred?
Credits earned at Hiroshima University are recognized and transferred in accordance with the policies and criteria of your home university. For specific details on the credit recognition and transfer process, please consult the appropriate representative at your home institution.
How many credits can I earn during the 3+1 Program?
During the 3+1 Program, students can earn up to 27 credits in a 9-month period (for fourth-year students) or up to 36 credits in a 12-month period (for third-year students) at Hiroshima University.
Do I need to arrange my own visa?
Yes, you are responsible for organizing your travel arrangements, including visa applications, flight bookings, and accommodations. Once your admission is confirmed, you will receive guidance on these procedures as necessary.
Can I work part-time?
Yes, you are allowed to work part-time for up to 28 hours per week, provided that you apply for and obtain a “Part-time Work Permit (*)” when you receive your residence card.
*Note: This permit is officially called “Permission to Engage in an Activity other than Those Permitted under the Status of Residence (資格外活動許可).”
How long does it take to travel from the Higashihiroshima Campus (Higashi-Hiroshima City) to the Kasumi or Higashi-Senda Campus (Hiroshima City)?
It takes approximately 80 minutes one way by public transportation.
How can I enroll in a graduate program at Hiroshima University after completing the 3+1 Program?
Students who enroll in October and complete the program in June must apply for and pass the entrance examination for Hiroshima University's graduate school in order to continue to a graduate program. If you are unable to pass the graduate school entrance examination while enrolled in the 3+1 program, there is a system that allows you to remain as a research student until the end of September of the year you complete the program, so that you can continue preparing for the entrance exam. However, this system is only available to those who wish to advance to a graduate program at Hiroshima University, and requires the approval of your academic advisor as well as meeting the language requirements and other conditions set by each faculty. Students who wish to enter a graduate program at Hiroshima University should consult with their academic advisor during the program and plan ahead by taking the necessary language proficiency test and other preparations.
Students who enroll in June and complete the program in February should consult directly with the Global Exchange Group.
Are there any scholarships or tuition fee waivers available?
The 3+1 Program does not qualify for scholarships or tuition fee waivers provided by Hiroshima University. However, you may be eligible for scholarships offered by external organizations.
How much are living expenses?
The estimated living expenses are as follows:
・Higashi-Hiroshima City:
Rent: 20,000–50,000 JPY
Total living expenses (including rent): 80,000–100,000 JPY/month
・Hiroshima City*:
Rent: 30,000–60,000 JPY
*Hiroshima City is home to the Kasumi Campus (Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences) and the Higashi-Senda Campus (School of Law and a part of School of Economics).
How should I arrange housing?
With Morito 3+1 students, you have the following three options for housing arrangements:
・Sign a lease for an apartment recommended by the Hiroshima University Co-op for international students.
・Sign a lease for a private apartment recommended by Hiroshima University.
・Arrange a lease on your own with a real estate agency of your choice.
After your acceptance is confirmed, detailed information regarding housing options will be provided. Please ensure that you carefully review the conditions, costs, and locations before signing any lease.
Note: Students enrolled in the 3+1 Program are not eligible to reside in the university dormitories (Ikenoue Student Dormitory or the International House).

Can I withdraw after applying to the program?
In principle, you cannot withdraw after your supervisor has been assigned following the interview process.
What level of Japanese proficiency is required?
The program requires the following levels of Japanese proficiency for applicants:
・Fourth-year students: Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N1 or an equivalent level.
・Third-year students: JLPT N1 or N2, or an equivalent level.
If you do not possess an official JLPT score, you must use Hiroshima University's designated form to obtain a statement of your Japanese proficiency from a Japanese language teacher or your academic advisor (only applicable if they provide research supervision in Japanese to the applicant). Additionally, a minimum of 600 hours of Japanese language study is required.
In addition to Japanese proficiency, it is recommended to have one of the following levels of English proficiency:
・TOEFL (iBT): 61 or higher
・TOEFL (PBT): 500 or higher
・IELTS (Academic): 5.0 or higher
・CET (College English Test): Band 6
How do I apply?
For students enrolling in October (Morito and IDEC), Hiroshima University sends the application guidelines to partner universities in early January each year.
For students enrolling in June (IDEC), Hiroshima University sends the application guidelines to partner universities in early December each year.
Please submit your application documents through Hiroshima University's IAO system by the deadline. You may make corrections before the deadline. Applications submitted after the deadline cannot be accepted.
How is the selection process?
Document screening (including application content and language proficiency) and interviews will be conducted. Applicants who pass the document screening will have an interview with their prospective academic advisor. The interview schedule will be notified to applicants who pass the document screening.
For students enrolling in October, interviews will be conducted between early April and late June.
For students enrolling in June, interviews will be conducted between late February and late March.
When will I know the selection results?
The results of the document screening will be notified within approximately two weeks after the application deadline. The interview results will also be communicated through your home university within approximately two weeks after the interview.
Are there Japanese language classes available?
Yes, you can take Japanese language courses offered by the Morito Institute of Global Higher Education. Before arriving in Japan, you will be required to take an online "Japanese Placement Test" to determine your proficiency level, and you will need to choose the class best suited to your level after the test. Additional details will be provided once your acceptance has been confirmed.
