On April 28, 2025, Hiroshima University (HU) signed a collaboration agreement with the Vietnam National Innovation Center (NIC).
The agreement was signed on the occasion of the “Japan-Vietnam Cooperation Forum for the Creation of High-Value-Added Industries in the High-Tech, GX and Semiconductor Sectors,” hosted by NIC, at a ceremony held in the presence of the Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and the Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. The forum was attended by a total of more than 300 people, including many experts from the governments, businesses, and academia of both countries. From HU, President Mitsuo Ochi, Executive Vice President Shinji Kaneko (Global Initiatives), and Professor Tran Dang Xuan (Head of the Global Campus Institute Vietnam Office) , attended the forum.
HU is currently working with the University of Idaho in the U.S. to launch a new international education program in the field of semiconductors. This program is designed to attract talented young individuals from across Asia and prepare them for professional careers in semiconductor industry. As part of this program, we are pleased to have concluded a collaboration agreement with NIC.
Under this agreement, NIC plans to provide scholarship support to Vietnamese students. This support is expected to help foster skilled human resources and broaden access to educational opportunities.
Exchange between HU and Vietnam has been rapidly deepening in recent years. At the 2023 G7 Hiroshima Summit, President Ochi met with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and introduced the HU's human resource development efforts. Currently, HU is pursuing partnerships with Vietnam in six areas: agriculture, semiconductors, carbon neutrality, smart cities, medicine, and Japanese language education. In 2024, HU established the “Hiroshima University Thai Nguyen Center” in collaboration with the Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, and hosted a Japanese Essay Contest at the University of Languages and International Studies - Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
HU currently has more than 1,800 international students from 85 countries and regions, with 74 students from Vietnam, the third largest number by country. HU has produced more than 400 Vietnamese graduates to date and has established alumni organizations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. HU will continue to contribute to the development of both countries by further strengthening our ties with Vietnamese government agencies, universities, and private companies, and by welcoming excellent students.
